Relationships between Malocclusion, Body Posture, and Nasopharyngeal Pathology in Pre-Orthodontic Children

Abstract: BackgroundMalocclusion, body posture, and breathing pattern may be correlated, but this issue is still controversial. The aim of the study was to examine the relationship between the type of malocclusion, body posture, and nasopharyngeal obstruction in children aged 7–14 years.Material/MethodsThe study group comprised 94 patients aged 7–14 years (mean±SD: 11.9±2.1 years); 44 (46.8%) males and 50 (53.2%) females. “…The literature reveals that there are certain difficulties in scientific investigations in this area because of different populations and different linguistic areas . Associations between malocclusion and speech disorders might not be related to anatomical structure of mouth cavity, but rather to the type of language itself . The research population of the present study consisted of Latvian‐speaking children; therefore, there are some difficulties in compare this study population to those in other studies because the Latvian language belongs to a separate group of languages (the Indo‐European group of languages) and some consonants (t, d, s, z) should be pronounced dentally in Latvian (while in English they are alveolar).…”
