Reliability Assessment of a 1 MV LTD

Abstract: Position A Position B (ne)Position B A I MV linear transformer driver (LTD) is being tested Diode with a large area e-beam diode load at Sandia National Laboratories (SNL). The experiments will be utilized to determine the repeatability of the output pulse and the reliability of the components. The 1 MV accelerator is being used to determine the feasibility of designing a 6 MV LTD for radiography experiments. The peak voltage, risetime, and pulse width as well as the cavity / timing jitter are analyzed to dete… Show more

“…Linear transformer drivers (LTDs) are a new pulsedpower architecture that may dramatically reduce the size and cost of high-voltage, high-current pulsed-power accelerators [1][2][3][4][5][6][7]. LTDs, however, place stringent demands on gas switches, requiring switches that can be charged to 200 kV DC, be triggered with a 1-jitter of 5-10 ns, be low inductance, have very low prefire and no-fire rates, and have lifetimes of at least several thousand shots when transferring $400 J of energy per shot.…”

“…The cavity generates a 500 kA, 100 kV power pulse across the liquid resistor with a rise time of less than 100 ns. Multiple cavities can then be stacked in series [3,8], to generate voltages above 1 MV.…”
