The Buginese and Madurese are well known as fierce sailors and are open-hearted ethnics in Indonesia. It seems that they have their typical characters and identities compared to the other ethnics in Indonesia. Their characters and identities become part of their life, including in economic, social customs or even when they immigrated to a new place. This phenomenology study tried to explain the behavior of Buginese and the people of Madurese who immigrated to Papua. The study also would seek to explore beyond migration of the Bugis and Madurese in Papua. This article was conducted in Papua to assess the patterns of migration and community interaction of Bugis and Madurese with other communities. The study findings revealed that Buginese and Madurese seem similar among others in terms of economic activity, mastery in the field of politics, and social role in the community. Besides, with their capacity, it has a role in religious activities which they always carry out in their environment. By not making it as a mission of deployment religious activities, but rather only to defend their religious understanding in a way that it would be limited just to the internal environment. It seems both the Buginese and Madurese firmly have a connection to the Islamic identity factors that are part of their religious expression.

This study examines efforts to build religious tolerance through multicultural education in schools. This research was conducted at the BOPKRI 1 Yogyakarta high school, as a school labeled a multicultural school. This is evidenced by the implementation of religious education as an effort to build awareness of religious tolerance in students. This research uses a qualitative approach with descriptive methods. The subjects of this study were the principal, teachers, and high school students BOPKRI 1 Yogyakarta. Data collection methods used in the form of observation, interviews, and documentation. Triangulation used in this research is triangulation of sources and techniques. The instrument in this study was researchers using observation guidelines, interview guidelines, and documentation guidelines. Analysis of the data used is data collection, data reduction, data presentation, and verification. The results of this study indicate that the form of religious education at Bopkri 1 High School in Yogyakarta is realized through religious education. religious education is a subject with a teaching system that is in the form of discussions about communication between faiths, both between students of the same religion and students of different religions. It aims to foster religious social values in students so that students are able to become human beings who are religious, moral and open. Teaching materials or materials in religious education are more about the values of faith, knowledge of each religion in general, and there is no material about the procedures for worship or creed of each religion. This research is expected to be a material of information and input for educators, researchers and education practitioners.

Higher education acts as the key institution to expand society. In addition, there is no reason to excuse. The higher education in Papua is among the pillar of Indonesian development. Therefore, the management and lectures should find formula to extend higher education in Papua to contribute for knowledge development. One key is partnership. Everyone should find opportunities from around the world to lengthen the practice. Moreover, the society will benefit from research activities.Keywords: higher education, learning, development "Kalau hendak seribu upaya, kalau tak hendak seribu dalih" (Pepatah Melayu) PENGANTARTerkadang alasan geografis, Tanah Papua, kerap menjadi alasan. Jarak yang terbentang dari ibukota ke Papua dijadikan untuk tidak mau berjuang bersama dengan kolega di wilayah lain Tanah Air. Padahal, dengan fasilitas yang ada, serta perkembangan teknologi informasi saat ini, semuanya tidak dapat lagi menjadi alasan utama. Jarak dari manapun tetap sama saja. Kita memiliki waktu yang sama, berarti memiliki kesempatan yang sama.Sudah saatnya, warga perguruan tinggi di Tanah Papua memiliki spirit untuk bersama-sama dengan seluruh warga perguruan tinggi Tanah Air dalam mencerdaskan kehidupan bangsa sebagaimana amanat Pembukaan Undang-undang Dasar. Alasan pendirian bangsa ini, paling tidak dua hal, keinginan untuk mencerdaskan kehidupan bangsa dan dengan kecerdasan itu berusaha untuk mewujudkan kesejahteraan rakyat.Perguruan tinggi menjadi penjaga khazanah pengetahuan (Minhaji, 2013).Sehingga sekecil apapun kemampuan yang dimiliki akan menjadi sebuah upaya untuk turut berkontribusi bagi kemajuan ilmu pengetahuan.
