This study was conducted to observe characteristics and preweaning growth traits of calves born from crossbreeding between Wagyu and Belgian Blue (BB) bulls with Brahman Cross (BX) dams. The experiment was conducted to compare two different crosses Belgian Blue (BB) x BX, Wagyu x BX and also with BX pure breed (BX x BX). In the first two crosses, we used Artificial Insemination (AI), while in the third natural mating occurred. The number of calves in the experiment was 18 from the first cross (BB-crossed), 17 from the second cross (Wagyu-crossed), and 15 from the third (BX).BB The calves were raised together with their dams until they reached weaning age in 180 days. The data collected was analyzed by Kruskal-Wallis Test and Mann-Whitney Test for significant differences. The coat colors of BB-crossed calves were predominantly black (77.22%), and all Wagyu-crossed calves were red; whereas BX calves' coat colors vary: 37.5% black, 31.25% red, and 31.25% white. There was no significant difference among groups in body size (except the withers height) and weight at birth. The BB-crossed, Wagyu-crossed and BX calves showed the preweaning growth on body length of 0.15±0.03, 0.17±0.03 and 0.11±0.03 cm/day; withers height of 0.18±0.02, 0.14±0.02 and 0.10±0.02 cm/day; heart girth of 0.32±0.05, 0.24±0.03 and 0.16±0.03 cm/day and daily body weight of 0.74±0.13, 0.62±0.06 and 0.39±0.11 kg/day respectively. The average daily gain of body length on BB-crossed and Wagyu-crossed calves was higher (P<0.05) than that of BX calves. The average withers height, heart girth, and body weight daily gain of BB-crossed calves were higher (P<0.05) than those of Wagyu-crossed calves and Wagyu-crossed calves were higher (P<0.05) than those of BX calves. It is concluded that crossing Brahman Cross dams with Belgian Blue and Wagyu bulls improves body size and weight gain of calves; further, crossbreeding with Belgian Blue bulls gives better improvement than that with Wagyu bulls.

The purpose of this study was to observe the size of reproductive organ and to evaluate the sperm quality of Belgian Blue (BB) crossbreed cattle. This cattle are the crossbreeding result between a female Brahman Cross (BX) cattle inseminated with frozen semen from pure male BB cattle, by Artificial Insemination (IB) method, as a candidate of superior bull. The samples of this study were 2.5 years old (BB1), (BB2), and (BB3) crossbreed cattle. Its process involved general physical examination, genital organ inspection, sperm production, and quality assessment. The data obtained were analyzed through descriptive analysis. The results of this study were the three BB crossbred cattle showed the good appearance of normal reproductive organs with scrotum circumferences of each bull were 40.2 cm, 38.6 cm, and 39.8 cm respectively, and sperm quality of the good and the normal motility values of each bull were 82%, 81% and 80%, viability 84%, 83%, and 86%, and the sperm concentrations of each bull were 2.218 million/ml, 1.986 million/ml and 2.120 million/ml respectively. As a result, it could be concluded that those three BB crossbreed cattle are suitable for being used as a superior bull.

The purpose of this study was to observed the potential use of coconut water + 20% egg yolk (CW) as an alternative diluent to replace Andromed®, on semen motility of Belgian Blue (BB) cattle. The sample were fresh semen collected from 3 years old BB using artificial vagina. The fresh semen was diluted into Andromed® diluent (P1) and coconut water + 20% egg yolk (P2). The semen motility (%) was observed at 0, 2, 4, 6, 12, 24 and 48 hours after dilution and then compared between group using t-test. The result showed that Andromed® found to give better motility compared to CW in all observation time. The average of semen motility (%) in accordance with observation time in group P1 was 77,67±2,51, 74,67±2,51, 72,33±2,51, 70,67±1,54, 69,33±1,54, 66,33±2,88 and 63,33±2,88%, respectively. Meanwhile, in P2 was 71,67±2,89, 65,00±5,00, 60,00±5,00, 58,33±2,89, 46,67±7,64, 41,67±7,64 and 26,67±7,64 % respectively. In conclusion, coconut water + 20% egg yolk could be replace the function of Andromed as diluent for AI using liquid semen with maximum storage time no more than 24 hours.
