Research Development on Sustainable Urban Infrastructure From 1991 to 2017: A Bibliometric Analysis to Inform Future Innovations

Abstract: Studies of sustainable urban infrastructure are expanding since the United Nations proposed the concept of sustainability in 1982. The need for more sustainable urban infrastructures led to many research efforts on innovative technologies and development strategies. We analyzed research progress on sustainable urban infrastructure from 1991 to 2017 using bibliometric, keyword co-occurrence and document cocitation network analysis. An increasing publication number suggests a rapid development of the sustainable… Show more

“…The development of urban greenery and the improvement of the quality of natural areas contributes to the preservation of biodiversity and can significantly reduce climate change [63,64]. Observing the direction and intensity of changes in this respect [65,66] can be considered not as an intellectual adventure, but rather as a duty of all actors shaping the future of spatial units, including local communities and other groups inhabiting them.…”

“…There are a variety of methods to predict the future development prospects of a technology. Since many technologies are developed in accordance with the S-curve trend, researchers use the S-curve to observe and predict the future trend of technologies (Bengisu and Nekhili 2006 ; Du et al 2019 ; Liu and Wang 2010 ). The evolution of technical systems generally goes through four stages: emerging, growth, maturity, and decay (saturation) (Ernst 1997 ).…”

“…Moreover, given the use of bibliometrics as a multidisciplinary tool for quantitatively analyzing bibliographic data using statistical and mathematical methods [21][22][23], several studies focused on the relation between sustainability and transport bibliometric analyses [6,[24][25][26][27][28][29][30][31] and sustainability and transport infrastructure [32][33][34][35]; however, as far as our knowledge is concerned, no attempt has been made in the field of bibliometrics and visualization studies that considers sustainability in the transport infrastructure that is related to economic returns.…”
