Shiftwork became common during the last few decades with the growing demands of human life. Despite the social inactivity and irregularity in habits, working in continuous irregular shifts causes serious health issues including sleep disorders, psychiatric disorders, cancer, and metabolic disorders. These health problems arise due to the disruption in circadian clock system, which is associated with alterations in genetic expressions. Alteration in clock controlling genes further affects genes linked with disorders including major depression disorder, bipolar disorder, phase delay and phase advance sleep syndromes, breast cancer, and colon cancer. A diverse research work is needed focusing on broad spectrum changes caused by jet lag in brain and neuronal system. This review is an attempt to motivate the researchers to conduct advanced studies in this area to identify the risk factors and mechanisms. Its goal is extended to make the shift workers aware about the risks associated with shiftwork.

Featured Application: This study highlights a novel application of α-mangostin hydrogel film based chitosan-alginate. α-mangostin has been known as an agent for oral cavity therapy. However, α-mangostin is difficult to be delivered directly to the site. This novel application of hydrogel film-based chitosan-alginate have the potential as carriers of α-mangostin for recurrent aphthous stomatitis therapy.Abstract: Many antiseptic drugs, local anaesthetics, and corticosteroids have been used for effective therapy of recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS). However, these drugs have harmful side effects. α-mangostin (α-M), a main compound of mangosteen (Garcinia mangostana L.) peel, has been known as a wound healing agent. In addition, hydrogel film as dressings designed to separate mucosal lesions from the oral environment, and improve the effectiveness of RAS therapy. The purpose of this study was to develop α-M hydrogel film based chitosan-alginate (ChAlg/α-M HF) for RAS. The in silico study by Discovery studio visualizer and AutoDock confirmed that hydrogen bonding between Ch, Alg, and α-M occurred. The results of physicochemical characterizations by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) indicated that the ChAlg/α-M HF had a lower crystalline form compared to pure α-M. In addition, ChAlg/α-M HF significantly improved the swelling ratio and tensile strength compared to that of ChAlg HF. Moreover, the existence of Alg increased the degradability of Ch, and closely related to the release of α-M from ChAlg HF. The in vitro release study confirmed that the release of α-M from ChAlg/α-M HF was the Fickian diffusion model. Finally, the mucoadhesive study revealed that ChAlg/α-M HF had a good mucoadhesive property. These results suggest that hydrogel film-based chitosan-alginate have the potential as carriers of α-M for RAS therapy.

With the rapid development of today’s communication technology, the need for a system capable to improve spectral efficiency, high data rates and at the same time can reduce inter-symbol interference (ISI) is necessary. Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) meet all the requirements needed. However, the high peak to average power ratio (PAPR) has become its major obstacle. This paper is focusing on the development of Median Codeword Shift (MCS), which a new PAPR reduction technique with the capability to reduce the computational complexity of the system. This can be achieved through codeword structure alterization and bit position manipulation by utilizing the circulant shift process. The simulation results revealed that the proposed technique overwhelm conventional OFDM and SCS with 24% improvement and 0.5 dB gap from SCS. In fact, the proposed technique possess a lower computational complexity by reducing 16.67% of the use of IFFT block in the system in contrast with SCS technique.
