Serious Games: An Evaluation Framework and Case Study

Abstract: Serious games show promise as an effective training method, but such games are complex and few guidelines exist for their effective evaluation. We draw on the design science literature to develop a serious game evaluation framework that emphasizes grounding evaluation in each of four key areastheoretical, technical, empirical, and external. We further recommend that serious game developers assume an iterative, adaptive approach to grounding an evaluation effort in these four areas, emphasizing some areas more … Show more

“…In this context the term evaluation is used as proposed in [39], to avoid confusion with the concept of validation that in some contexts refers to measurements validity (e.g., measurements accuracy). Therefore, we will refer to the term evaluation as the "confirmation through the provision of objective evidence that the requirements for a specific intended use or application of a system have been fulfilled" [39], where the term "system" refers to the game to be evaluated. As previously mentioned the purpose of the Reliability Game is to collect data regarding source quality and source type impact on SA and SAW.…”

“…They make it easier for users to get involved and to master the principles taught in the training materials more quickly [6]. However, the creation of serious games requires a greater effort than the construction of a classical training [7]. This is why we have chosen, for this article, to focus on the construction logic that was ours.…”

“…In terms of measurement metrics, Han 15 used the Intrinsic Motivation Inventory (IMI) to measure players' subjective experience. In addition, immersion, satisfaction, and engagement are also commonly used indicators in the measurement of game user experience 6,28,29 …”
