Serological and Molecular Comparison Study for Diagnosis of Cytomegalovirus Infection in aborted Pregnant Women in Iraq

Abstract: This study was conducted to investigate the Cytomegalovirus (CMV) infections of pregnant women. The samples were collected from Mosul and Baghdad hospitals in Iraq for two years and the tested women within the age category of under 20 to above 39 years. One thousand five hundred samples were taken as serum, to use in ELISA (IgM, IgG). EDTA blood, Heparin blood and cervical swabs were used in molecular tests. Three hundred positive samples demonstrating the presence of IgM and IgG antibodies using ELISA test. I… Show more

“…To ensure that all CMV IgM -positive samples for IgG avidity has been identified and screened. The present study found in Table 7 that the age group of 20 to 30 years recorded the highest incidence of microbial cytomegalovirus infections could increase the risk of cases of abortion in women, furthermore it is the less efficient as people grow older, and this finding was supported by our research agreement with the findings of the previous study (13) who reported that the majority of HCMV infections occurred in the 20-29 years age group. The occurrence of primary infections of CMV may be due to that most marriages in our population occurred among this age group.…”

“…Highly significant differences were detected between the studied groups regarding age (years) distribution as shown in Table5, eight of women were 17-20 years old, 24 were 20-24 years old, 24 were 25-29 years old, 21 were 30-39 and 13 were above 40 years old. The present study agrees with the study by Anmar et al(13) who found the highest seropositivity (29%) is shown in the age groups of (20-29) years.…”

“…Advantages of ELISA comprising of simplicity, cheapness and ability of determining the history of infection (early or late) make this method suitable for evaluating the presence of virus [42]. However, the less sensitivity and higher false results convinced some researchers to use other methods such as IHC or ISH to assess the presence of the virus [45]. Of the 29 studies reviewed, 13 studies used IHC or ISH techniques (Table 3).…”
