Serum Noradrenaline Response to Standing Up in Patients with Parkinson’s Disease1

Abstract: Responses of serum noradrenaline (NA) levels to standing up were determined in patients with Parkinson’s disease (PD) examining 15 patients and 13 healthy subjects of similar age in order to obtain information about autonomic failure in PD. Mild symptoms of autonomic dysfunction were found in all the patients. The mean (± SD) increment of serum NA levels as a response to standing up of patients was 0.11 ± 0.29 nmol/1 and that of the controls 1.09 ± 1.15, the percentage rises being 5.4 ± 12.1 and 38.2 ± 35.0, r… Show more

“…Stud ies prior to 1989 which include figures for prevalence of autonomic symptomatology [2,3] either offer no infor mation on sexual dysfunction or involve only a small number of patients [2], The only study that mentions sex ual impotence as a symptom specifically investigated is the report by Aminoff and Wilcox [4] who reported none in 4 of his male PD patients. Lipe et al [8] discussed sex ual dysfunction in PD men and age-matched men af fected with arthritis.…”

“…Autonomic dysfunction in association with Parkin son's disease (PD) has been described before in a number of reports including James Parkinson's original mono graph [1], There are very' few studies which address the prevalence of diverse autonomic symptomatology in PD [2,3], and they do not include data for the prevalence of certain symptoms such as erectile dysfunction (ED) and other sexual dysfunctions, dysphagia or heartburn. These reports tend to characterize these symptoms collectively as disturbances of micturition or symptoms of bowel dys function.…”

“…[13] Turkka et al measured the serum noradrenalin and found no significant difference in baseline serum noradrenaline between patients with PD and healthy individuals. [14] Mehagnoul-Schipper et al also found similar resting HR and BP between patients with PD and control group. [15] A study by Barbic et al showed that in the supine position, patients with PD showed similar cardiovascular, neural modulation as in healthy age-matched controls.…”

“…Many investigators have reported that the plasma norepinephrine concentration is lower in PD patients [24]. The plasma norepinephrine concentration during standing responses is low in PD patients [18,19,24,25]. Cardiac (123)I-metaiodobenzylguanidine (123I-MIBG) is a pharmacologically inactive analogue of norepinephrine, which is similarly metabolized in noradrenergic neurons.…”
