Simplified method for polarization-sensitive optical coherence tomography

Abstract: We report a method for extracting the birefringence properties of biological samples with micrometer-scale resolution in three dimensions, using a new form of polarization-sensitive optical coherence tomography. The method measures net retardance, net fast axis, and total reflectivity as a function of depth into the sample. Polarization sensing is accomplished by illumination of the sample with at least three separate polarization states during consecutive acquisitions of the same pixel, A scan, or B scan. The… Show more

“…Comparison of the Stokes parameters of the incident state to that reflected from the sample can yield a depth-resolved map of optical properties such as birefringence [8]. PS-OCT has been incorporated in fiber-based systems using standard single-mode fiber [10,11] and using polarization-maintaining fiber [12,13]. Another extension, optical Doppler tomography (ODT), is capable of depth-resolved imaging of flow [14][15][16][17][18][19].…”

“…Initially, OCT was applied in ophthalmology [14,15] Sensitive OCT (PS-OCT) [22,23], able to extract the birefringence properties of biological tissues and wavelength dependent OCT modalities, like refractometric OCT [24] or spectroscopic OCT [25,26]. What is more, OCT can be interfaced to a wide range of commercially available and customized instruments such as endoscopes, catheters, or laparoscopes, which enable the imaging of internal organ systems [27,28].…”
