Statistics Applied to Research in High School in the Online Modality: Promoting the Development of the Cognitive Elements of Literacy

Abstract

This qualitative study analyzes the development of statistical literacy proposed by Iddo Gal, through a practice carried out with 23 students (15-18 years). The proposal was part of a pilot project that meets the new Brazilian high school curriculum, implemented in 2022. The students experienced the stages of the statistical process, participating voluntarily in the elective discipline called Statistics Applied to Research, whose meetings took place in the on-line modality. It was found that the experience provided the students to adopt critical positions in the situations studied. From the analysis of various types of data, it was possible to learn statistical concepts, through the production of information. Besides the role of the students not being restricted to mere consumers of statistical messages, there was the development of argumentative capacity. Este estudo qualitativo analisa o desenvolvimento do letramento estatístico proposto por Iddo Gal, mediante uma prática realizada com 23 estudantes (15–18 anos). A proposta integrou um projeto piloto que atende ao novo currículo para o Ensino Médio brasileiro, implementado em 2022. Os discentes vivenciaram as etapas do processo estatístico, participando voluntariamente da disciplina eletiva denominada Estatística Aplicada à Pesquisa, cujos encontros ocorreram na modalidade on-line. Constatou-se que a experiência proporcionou aos estudantes adotarem posicionamentos críticos frente às situações estudadas. A partir da análise de vários tipos de dados, possibilitou-se a aprendizagem de conceitos estatísticos, mediante a produção de informações. Além do papel dos discentes não ficar restrito a meros consumidores de mensagens estatísticas, houve o desenvolvimento da capacidade argumentativa.
