Structural and Optical Properties of Self-Assembled Chains of Plasmonic Nanocubes

Abstract: Solution-based linear self-assembly of metal nanoparticles offers a powerful strategy for creating plasmonic polymers, which, so far, have been formed from spherical nanoparticles and cylindrical nanorods. Here we report linear solution-based self-assembly of metal nanocubes (NCs), examine the structural characteristics of the NC chains, and demonstrate their advanced optical characteristics. In comparison with chains of nanospheres with similar dimensions, composition, and surface chemistry, predominant face-… Show more

“…[ 3 ] In contrast, for those 1D nanogaps composed of two close fl at-sided metals, it is straightforward to generate well-defi ned, high-density hotspots along the entire length. [ 10 ] Thus, 1D nanogaps are robust against local defects or impurities, enabling more reliable and reproducible surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS). Further, fabricating a 2D array on a plane will largely increase the throughput and gap density.…”

“…Rapidly developing self-assembly fabrication methods allow producing nanostructures with simple and cost-effective techniques [14][15][16][17][18]. One of the main features of self-assembly methods is the randomness and disorder in the fabricated structures.…”

“…27). For patchy nanocubes, the face-to-face and the ‘checkerboard’ assembly via the formation of four bonds between the edges may result in a similar reduction in the surface free energy of the system, whereas for nonpatchy nanocubes, the formation of close-packed structures would be favoured, owing to the maximum screening of unfavourable polymer interactions with a poor solvent 30 .…”
