This paper examines the validity of the Approaches and Study Skills Inventory for Students-short version (ASSIST; Tait et al. in Improving student learning: Improving students as learners, 1998), to be used with Portuguese undergraduate students. The ASSIST was administrated to 566 students, in order to analyse a Portuguese version of this inventory. Exploratory factor analysis (principal axis factor analysis followed by direct oblimin rotation) reproduced the three main factors that correspond to the original dimensions of the inventory (deep, surface apathetic and strategic approaches to learning). The results are consistent with the background theory on approaches to learning. Additionally, the reliability analysis revealed acceptable internal consistency indexes for the main scales and subscales. This inventory might represent a valuable research tool for the assessment of approaches to learning among Portuguese higher education students.

No presente trabalho apresentam-se alguns resultados e as conclusões mais relevantes de um estudo realizado, na Universidade dos Açores, no âmbito de um projecto de investigação sobre o desenvolvimento do estudante do ensino superior. Neste artigo, em particular, analisam-se as atitudes e estratégias de aprendizagem mais utilizadas pelos alunos da Universidade dos Açores com base numa amostra constituída por 370 alunos que frequentavam, em 2001-2002, quatro cursos de licenciatura existentes em dois dos trê spólos desta Universidade: Ponta Delgada e Angra do Heroísmo. A avaliação das atitudes e estratégias foi efectuada através do QACE – Questionário de Atitudese Comportamentos de Estudo (Bessa & Tavares,1998). As análises estatísticas procuraram, por um lado, avaliar a qualidade da métrica deste questionário e, por outro, descrever, os alunos nos seus comportamentosde estudo e de aprendizagem. Os resultados são consistentes com os de outros estudos similares, realizados a nível nacional e internacional, junto da população estudantil universitária.

ResumenEn este trabajo se analiza los hábitos de estudio de estudiantes de la carrera de Ingeniería Agrícola en cursos de Química Básica. Se describen las pruebas y metodologías utilizadas para la evaluación de los hábitos de estudio de los alumnos antes y después del curso, y se discuten los resultados. Se concluye que la escasa disciplina para el estudio y la falta de concentración en lo que estudian, así como la falta de organización de su tiempo y la dificultad para relacionar lo aprendido en diferentes áreas del conocimiento, son los principales obstáculos para un mejor aprendizaje de la Química Básica. Palabras clave: métodos de enseñanza, hábitos de estudio, enseñanza-aprendizaje, educación universitaria Habits of Study of Agriculture Engineering Students and their Impact on the Performance of a Chemistry Course AbstractIn this work the habits of study of Agricultural Engineering students in a course on Basic Chemistry, are analyzed. The tests and methods used for the evaluation of the habits of study before taking the course and after finishing it are described, and the results are discussed. The main conclusion is that the lack of discipline to study and of concentration on what they are studying, the lack of organization of their schedule and the difficulty to relate what they have learned in the different areas of knowledge, are the main obstacles to better learn Basic Chemistry.
