Sunlight-induced transformation of sulfadiazine and sulfamethoxazole in surface waters and wastewater effluents

Abstract: Sulfadiazine (SD) and sulfamethoxazole (SMX) are widely used sulfonamide antibiotics, which are present as contaminants in surface waters and are known to undergo phototransformation. This kinetic study was conducted to identify the processes responsible for their phototransformation in sunlit surface waters. Water samples from the Thur River (Switzerland) and from a pilot wastewater treatment plant, as well as aqueous solutions of two well-characterized natural dissolved organic matter (DOM) extracts, namely … Show more

“…The comparably large variations for sulfamethoxazole may be attributed to low initial concentrations and analytical imprecisions. For instance, photolytic transformation and back-transformation from human metabolites has been reported (Bonvin et al, 2012;Bahnmuller et al, 2014). Similar removals with all dosing combinations were also observed for other OMPs, such as non-pharmaceuticals benzotriazole and iomeprol (Fig.…”

“…15 For SD, almost the same slope parameter value was obtained as for SMX, confirming the similarity in the photochemical behavior of these two sulfonamides that has been recently described elsewhere. 29 The ordinate intercepts of the regression lines in Figure 2a are generally below the value of 1 predicted by eq 4 and indicate a deviation of the experimental data from the simple model described above. It is possible that the deviation resulted from the presence of antioxidant moieties in the DOMs that contributed to the EDC (measured by MEO) but that were not reactive with triplet-induced transformation intermediates of SD and SMX.…”

“…9,10,13,37,[45][46][47] Furthermore, we sought to examine whether apparent quantum yields of 1 O 2 and triplet OM vary in similar ways with OM source in order to verify the assumption that triplet OM is the precursor to 1 O 2 35,36 and to examine whether probes for the two species provide consistent information on the production of triplet state photochemistry. Finally, we evaluated the relationships of the respective quantum yields to OM properties, including E 2 /E 3 ratios and OM isolate electron-donating and accepting capacities, to assess whether previously reported relationships for DOM also applied to EfOM and natural waters receiving treated wastewater effluent discharges.…”
