Synthetic Applications of Cyclopropene and Cyclopropenone: Recent Progress and Developments

Abstract: Smallest ring size, high ring strain, and more reactivity of cyclopropene have brought the attention of researchers for chemical exploration. In this context, the chemistry of cyclopropene and cyclopropenone has exponentially grown over the last few years. This present review focuses on the most recent developments in cyclopropane chemistry.

“…For the past few decades, transition-metal catalyzed C–C bond activation has grown to become one of the most promising areas in modern synthetic chemistry, due to its high atom/step economy and creative strategy to reorganize the molecular skeletons in unique ways. 1 Cyclopropenones are ideal candidates for this field; 2,3 as the smallest “Hückel-aromatic” compounds, they function as versatile 3C synthons for the construction of diverse chemical skeletons. 4–6 Recently, much attention has focused on the ring-opening of cyclopropenones via a consecutive C–H/C–C activation pathway, in which an active C–M intermediate is generated in situ .…”

“…Cyclopropenones are partially aromatic, highly strained, yet readily available building blocks in organic synthesis . While most investigations are centered on transition-metal catalysis, the organocatalytic activation of cyclopropenones is relatively less developed .…”

“…Cyclopropene derivatives have been used as extremely reactive units in organic chemistry 1) owing to their high ring-strain energy. 2) They have become popular bioorthogonal reagents 3) and chemical biological reagents [4][5][6][7] because of their small size and ability to be genetically encoded.…”
