From a Bourdieuan perspective, the production of knowledge in the form of empirical studies validates the symbolic power of certain groups. It is arguably proposed that the more empirical studies published in particular groups of people, the more robust the symbolic power of the respective group is. This study is set to reveal the degree of academic productivity of East Nusa Tenggara as a symbolic power owned by scholars in the area, as demonstrated by empirical studies conducted to investigate educational issues in the area. Two research questions were proposed namely: (1) what areas of inquiries did the researchers pursue; and (2) what are their major findings? Sixty-four scholarly articles related to the English learning-teaching (published from 2016 to 2021) were analyzed using document analysis methods to identify the most up-to-date research themes. The results indicated that teaching strategies and material developments are the highest numbers with 41 articles; factors that affect the English language learning were 14 articles; the teaching competencies were 4 articles, and the perception of English learning-teaching were 5 articles. The conclusion is that academic production is low, cross-validating that low symbolic power correlates to more concrete components (i.e., a high degree of poverty).

Speaking becomes one of the English skills that should be developed. One of the schools that provided a special speaking class for the students was the Islamic Boarding Based Junior High School of Amanatul Ummah. Speaking class was labeled as a conversation subject in this school. In conversation class, the teachers are required to improve the students’ speaking skills. The teachers who handled a conversation subject were foreign teachers who used full English during teaching and learning. This paper investigates the foreign teachers’ perspectives of the teaching conversation subject. This research used descriptive qualitative. The data was obtained through observation, semi-structured interviews, and documentation. The result of this research showed that the foreign teachers faced several problems related to the students’ understanding, engagement, and teaching materials. The strategies used by the teachers were using digital tools, gestures, language simplifying, early materials preparation, and discussion with senior EFL teachers. This research contributes to the literature of English language teaching related to the teaching conversation subject.

The pandemic situation of COVID-19 has damaged various aspects, including education. Distance learning becomes the substitute to facilitate teaching-learning, especially in rural areas. It uses television as a teaching medium to tackle the internet connection problem. Television has been used for a long time and used for entertainment purposes. However, educators start to add educational purposes, especially to learn a language. Unfortunately, television was only an additional teaching tool and was not used thoroughly. This research aims to observe the teacher's perspective of Distance Learning Television (DLTV) to teach speaking, particularly in a rural area, Thailand. The subject research is two English teachers who teach primary school in Thailand, and they use DLTV as the teaching media. The result showed that teachers have a positive perspective on DLTV as a teaching medium, especially in speaking. It contains benefits that can support students in their speaking comprehension. Furthermore, teachers have the role of facilitators and encourage students during the learning process. Despite the drawback of DLTV, it is still be taken care of by teachers by collaborative work with colleagues
