The hope and the hype of organoid research

Abstract: The recent increase in organoid research has been met with great enthusiasm, as well as expectation, from the scientific community and the public alike. There is no doubt that this technology opens up a world of possibilities for scientific discovery in developmental biology as well as in translational research, but whether organoids can truly live up to this challenge is, for some, still an open question. In this Spotlight article, Meritxell Huch and Juergen Knoblich begin by discussing the exciting promise o… Show more

“…In many cases, adverse effects arise due to hepatotoxicity, cardiotoxicity, and/or neurotoxicity . Reliable cellular technologies are needed to increase the safety, reproducibility, and efficacy of the testing platform and to mimic more closely human physiological organ functions in vitro . Such technologies should ideally be highly predictive when used for in vitro assays to enable effective drug/compound screening and safety assessment.…”

“…As with other advances in science, it will be important moving forward to balance the hype with the reality and hence not fuel hope in inappropriate ways. Hence, the issue opens with a thought-provoking piece (Huch et al, 2017) consisting of two parts: the hope of organoid research written by Huch and Knoblich, and the hype -including what it will take to overcome it -written by Lutolf and Martinez-Arias. Indeed, organoid culture is also not without some ethical challenges, as discussed in the Spotlight article from Munsie, Hyun and Sugarman (Munsie et al, 2017).…”
