The Measurement of CFF: Some Methodological Considerations

Abstract: CFF is correlated with multifarious physical, physiological, personal, time, methodological, pharmacological and clinical variables. Therefore, two Iines of research are urgently needed: the method has to be standardized and it has to fulfill some specified quality criteria. Three examples are given to illustrate violations of these criteria. 1) Though the mydriatic activity of anticholinergic drugs is known, most of the equipment marketed for CFF measurement does not provide for a control of the dilation of t… Show more

“…The CFF test measures the optical fusion threshold. The test was performed with an electronic device (ZAK, Simbach/Inn, Germany) which uses a forced choice paradigm, a modification of the method of constant stimuli (Aufdembrinke, 1982). The subject sits in front of a tube in which four light emitting diodes (LEDs) are arranged circular at 90° intervals.…”

“…The need for pupillary control in CFF testing, particularly in psychopharmacology research, has been frequently pointed out (AufdemBrinke 1982;Danjou et al 1992;Lawrence et al 1982;Smith and Misiak 1976). Concomitant mydriatic effects may lead to a wrongful favourable representation of a drugs cognitive profile, or may even mask a drug's detrimental effect on CNS activation, whereas miotic effects may be misinterpreted as sedative actions.…”

“…Der Normwertbereich ist in Tabelle 2 dargestellt. [5].
