The role of fine‐needle aspiration cytology of the testis in the diagnostic evaluation of infertility

Abstract: Objective To compare the diagnostic value of cytological (all spermatogenic cells present except spermatids and spermatozoa). There was a good correlation between smears of fine-needle aspirate with that of histological sections obtained by testicular biopsy in the evaluation the diagnosis on the cytological smears and histological sections in 58 of 60 patients (97%). In two patients of infertility. Patients and methods The study included 60 patients there was scanty aspirate and few cells, giving an inaccurat… Show more

“…[8][9][10][11] The cytologic findings in cases of infertility recapitulate the different histologic categories, and FNA has the potential to replace testicular biopsy in the assessment of spermatogenesis. Any discrepancy between cytology and histology is primarily the result of inadequate sampling rather than differences in the diagnosis.…”

“…Fine needle aspiration (FNA) biopsy was introduced as a less invasive and safer diagnostic tool for diagnosing male factor. 4,5,8,9 The concordance rate of FNA and histologic diagnosis reached > 85% in many studies, with high specificity and sensitivity reaching > 95%. 5,[10][11][12][13][14] There has been growing concern among medical and nonmedical media in Jordan in the last decade about an increase in infertility rates due to male factor, presumably from various noxious insults after the 1991 Gulf War.…”

“…Similar difficulties are described in the literature. 8,[10][11][12] Touch imprint preparations provide a rapid means of examining the cellular contents of the seminiferous tubules. Because mature, intact spermatozoa are clearly identified in this manner, such cytologic preparations are useful in distinguishing late maturation arrest from normal spermatogenesis; that distinction is sometimes difficult on frozen and paraffin sections.…”

“…4 The correlation between material from fine needle aspiration cytology and histology is reported in the range of 87-97.%. 3,11,12 Insufficient material affects the results. In our study, cytology correlated …”
