Thermal degradation behaviors and flame retardancy of PC/ABS with novel silicon‐containing flame retardant

Abstract: SUMMARYA novel flame retardant (DVN) containing silicon, phosphorus, and nitrogen has been synthesized from the reaction of 9,10-dihydro-9-oxa-10-phosphaphenanthrene-10-oxide (DOPO), vinylmethyldimethoxy silane (VMDMS) and N --(aminoethyl)--aminopropyle methyl dimethoxy silane (NMDMS), then incorporated into polycarbonate/acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (PC/ABS) alloy. The flame retardancy of PC/ABS/DVN is evaluated by cone calorimeter and limited oxygen index (LOI) and the thermal degradation behavior is inve… Show more

“…Some of these instrumental techniques, such as thermal analysis, are usually used to study the behaviour of certain materials when exposed to the action of fire and high temperatures. As a rule, the fundamental objective of these analyses is to look at the possible improvements that could come about through the use of certain materials that could substitute or complement others [20,21].…”

“…Tuinstra and Koenig (T-K) [22] found that the relative intensity ratio R of the D peak to the G peak is inversely proportional to an in-plane microcrystalline size and an in-plane phonon correlation length obtained from Raman spectroscopy. Therefore, the T-K relation has frequently been used to evaluate in-plane microcrystalline size and to characterize the carbonaceous species.…”

“…The peak observed at 1580 cm −1 (G peak) could be due to the C-C vibration in the aromatic layers. The peak at 1330 cm −1 (D peak) can be attributed to the vibration of carbon atoms with dangling bonds in the plane termination of disordered graphite or glassy carbon [21,22].…”

“…Illustration for the synthesis of 7Ph-T7-Vinyl and 7Ph-T7-DOPO Phosphorus compounds have been investigated in epoxy resins, and findings show that these compounds can impart flame retardancy through flame inhibition in the gas and condensed phases. DOPO, a cyclic phosphate with a diphenyl structure, exhibits high thermal stability, oxidation resistance, and good water resistance [7]. DOPO is always incorporated into epoxy resins or other polymers to improve their flame-retardant properties and thermal stability [8].…”
