Tourism inward investment and regional economic development effects: perspectives from tourism satellite accounts

Abstract: The regional economic contribution of tourism-related inward investment is difficult to assess. This is due to data availability problems, and with inward investment in such industries often dwarfed by that in either manufacturing or other services. There are, however, cases where tourism demand represents a significant proportion of regional economic demand, and often in regions where there are economic development challenges. This paper suggests that the development of regional tourism satellite accounts (TS… Show more

“…There is little research in the scientific literature on the impact of regional tourism on the economic development of countries, in particular, due to the complexity of assessment and the availability of regional data, especially consumer spending in tourism [4,5]. Tourist demand is used as an indicator that reflects the share of tourism in regional economic demand, especially in underdeveloped economic regions [5,6]. Revenue from tourism is also used to assess a country's economic growth [7].…”

“…Kumar [21] analyzed the determinants of tourism industry performance and explored the relative importance of each factor by using data envelopment analysis (DEA) and Bootstrap regression models. In addition, some scholars have used different quantitative methods to investigate the factors that affect the performance of tourism industry [22,23]. Perles-Ribes et al [4] studied the relationship between output and economic performance of hotel industry and measured the economic performance of hotel industry by using unit root test, analysis of covariance, and causality test, taking the number of tourists and exchange rate as the objects.…”

“…The firms vary according to whether they actually have a registered office in another part of the UK or overseas. There has been an active debate in Wales (and other UK regions) on the regional economic consequences of external ownership (see most recently McNabb and Munday, 2017; Xu et al., 2019) but limited UK research analysing the specific effects of inward investment in electricity supply. Prior research has examined linkages between inward investment in power generation and economic growth (see, e.g.…”
