Trace metals and lanthanides in a tropical river environment

Abstract: Abstract. The river Periyar in the State of Kerala, India is subjected to pollution from a number of industrial units such as zinc smelter, rare earth plant, phosphatic fertilizer unit etc. The levels of Zn and Cd in water and sediments in the river have in recent years increased ten fold as compared to a study conducted earlier during 1970. The levels of these trace metals in water increase at the backwater zone under high salinity in summer due to solubilisation from the sediments. Among the lanthanides Ce i… Show more

“…É sabido que existe uma relação diretamente proporcional entre as concentrações de metais pesados e o teor da fração fina dos sedimentos, assim como com a concentração de matéria orgânica nos sedimentos (Paul et al 1994, Cortecci 2005. Isso caracteriza propriedades geoquímicas importantes no processo da mobilização desses poluentes inorgânicos nos sedimentos.…”

“…Another source is washout from agricultural land because some fertilisers contain Cd levels of even up to 40 mg/kg (Kumar et al, 2022). One of the major sources of diffuse Cd pollution is the production of inorganic fertilisers from phosphate ores (Paul et al, 1994;Rashmi et al, 2020). The major environmental Cd sources are Zn and Pb ores as it occurs naturally in their sulphide ores.…”

“…Additionally, residual fuel oils from the daily navigation of vessels in the Graciosa River estuary may also be contributing to the occurrence of metals (as suggested by Paul et al, 1994;Förstner and Wittman, 1993), as these oils have in their composition hydrocarbons and trace metals such as Ni and Cu. The concentrations of Fe are relatively low following the same trend observed by Lima (2001), that observed the pre-weathered source material and the pedoclimatic conditions of the Amazon region were driving factors for the low levels of Fe.…”

“…The total concentration of metals in the soil, which are usually present as trace elements, can be attributed to the soil parent material as well as the impact of human activities (Paul et al, 1994). The main anthropogenic sources of heavy metals, in addition to the natural ones, have been related to urban effluents (mainly for Cr, Cu, Pb, Zn, Mn and Ni), burning of fossil fuels (Cu, Ni, Pb), beneficiation industries of iron and steel (Cr and Zn), fertilizers (Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni and Zn) and tailings deposits (Zn, Mn and Pb) (Förstner;Wittman, 1993).…”
