Understanding Digital Note-Taking Practice for Visualization

Abstract: We present results and design implications from a study of digital note-taking practice to examine how visualization can support revisitation, reflection, and collaboration around notes. As digital notebooks become common forms of external memory, keeping track of volumes of content is increasingly difficult. Information visualization tools can help give note-takers an overview of their content and allow them to explore diverse sets of notes, find and organize related content, and compare their notes with thei… Show more

“…Collections of text documents are a common type of visualization dataset, e.g. for sensemaking [7], for the digital humanities [28], or for personal use [70]. The content of text can be visualized, as in, e.g., the content of documents in DocuBurst [16], the content of a novel in Writing Without Words [56], and the sonic topology of poems in Poemage [43].…”

“…This means that while using gamification in learning, students have several notes related to the learning material during the lesson. Recording material in the form of notes involves information processing and content filtering (Willett et al, 2015). Understanding this kind of material can help students become more actively involved in learning, which can contribute to increased motivation (Papageorgiou, 2021;Tan, 2018).…”

“…Visualization involves using visuals to present large amounts of data according to certain parameters or categories, such as the collection of data into charts, graphs, scatter plots or other standard types of visualization (Meloncon and Wartner, 2017). The application of visualization techniques to bibliometric maps facilitates new depths of understanding of a network’s structure and uncovers relations between nodes that would be otherwise difficult to observe (Willett et al, 2015; Xie et al, 2015). In a recent article, Vílchez-Román et al (2021) show how using bibliometrics and information visualization can provide a ‘picture at a glance’, from which decision-makers can structure processes and organize outputs/outcomes.…”
