Investigations with various fractions of a crude extract of the corpus luteum have shown that the degree of desensitization to oxytocin in vitro does not always run parallel with the effect (progestational proliferation) of the luteal hormone on the endometrium [Robson & Illingworth, 1931;De Fremery, Luchs & Tausk, 1932], and have suggested the possibility that the active factors responsible for the actions on the uterine muscle and endometrium respectively may not be identical. In view of the recent isolation and partial synthesis of progesterone, the active principle of the corpus luteum, it was decided to determine to what extent the known actions of the luteal extracts on the uterus could be attributed to this substance and the first part of this paper records the results obtained.…”
