VALENCE: affective visualisation using EEG

Abstract: VALENCE is an interactive visualisation controlled by live brainwave monitoring. We used a wireless EEG headset to monitor the player's alpha waves (an indicator of relaxation) and valence (an indicator of emotion or arousal). The game world is an emergent system of attractive and repulsive forces responding to EEG input.

“…The aim of the project was to open up new methods of collaboration between artists and the public. Similarly, De Smedt and Menschaert [27] developed a system called "VALENCE", which interpreted affective brain signals and animated colorful particles on a public display accordingly (see Fig. 2).…”

“…The Electroencephalograms (EEG) record the electric activity of a human's brain through electrodes that are attached to the scalp that used traditionally for medical purposes in diagnosis and management of various brain-related disorders such as the case of epilepsy and abnormal neuronal activity [20]. The EEG feature also assists in tracking patients' brain activities while patients are carrying out their daily tasks.…”

“…Monitoring such affective biofeedback signal can be useful to improve the gaming experience [1]. FPS (first-person shooters are a type of three-dimensional shooter game [2], featuring a first-person point of view with which the player sees the action through the eyes of the player character) game is a video game genre centered on gun shooting and projectile weapon-based combat through a first-person perspective.…”
