Value Driven Design Revisited: Emerging Modelling Concepts and Applications

Abstract: Extended product warranties, leasing, and pay-per-use schemes are few examples of how manufacturing companies are shifting their focus from selling products to offering “solutions”, combining products and services to maximise customer value. The idea of optimising a system towards the best ‘value’ is both “intuitive and sensible”, and processes such as Value Driven Design (VDD), have been proposed to supplement traditional engineering design methodologies. Yet, value-driven initiatives struggle to communicate … Show more

“…From a research perspective, this paper has contributed by applying the surplus value equation-as formulated originally in VDD [19]-in a long industrial project with many iterations and partners involved. Such a consistent and systematic use of surplus value has not yet been studied [58,59]. Therefore, the paper has extended the research on the use of value-based approaches, working with real-life examples.…”

“…Future work may also explore the vast applications of Product-Service Systems (PSS) design methodologies in research projects which incorporate the needs of users when creating solutions that address user satisfaction, expectations and needs (Braga et al, 2020). Such design-oriented goals form the basis of Value Driven Design (VDD) processes (Bertoni et al, 2019, Ericson et al, 2007 which complement conventional design methodologies in engineering (Panarotto et al, 2017, Isaksson et al, 2013.…”

“…Usually, the literature approaches the process of PSS development from the provider perspective [11,10]. Few studies integrate the customer perspective of value creation in PSS development [4,2]. In this research, we consider the customer as a key actor on value co-creation, according to the service-dominant logic (SDL) [6].…”
