Twenty-five acutely disturbed psychotic patients were treated in an open study with a single injection of zuclopenthixol acetate 5% in 'Viscoleo, a thin vegetable oil. Patients were assessed post-injection for 3 days using the BPRS, CGI, and a specially designed behaviour/activity scale. Doses of 50 to 150 mg proved effective in 24 (96%) of 25 patients, with pronounced and rapid reduction in psychotic symptoms over the study period. The mean total BPRS score after 72 hours was reduced by over 57%. Tranquillization and sedation appeared within 15 to 90 minutes of injection. Unwanted symptoms were generally mild and of low incidence. The results showed that a single injection of zuclopenthixol acetate 5% in 'Viscoleo' provided rapid tranquillization and sedation coupled with an antipsychotic effect over 3 days. This profile offers a distinct advantage over neuroleptic preparations conventionally used for the initial treatment of acutely disturbed psychotic patients.
Objective: The objective of the present study was to investigate the Evaluation of In vivo antioxidant activity of Ethanolic extract of root of Smilax zeylanica(EESZ) on Aluminium Chloride Induced apoptosis suppressing oxidative stress in Wistar rats. Materials and Methods: The ethanolic extract from the roots of S. china by hot continuous percolation method. The rats were divided into 5 groups and each group consists of 6 animals. Rats were treated with EESC for 150 and 300 mg/ kg of body weight and piracetam, 0.5 mg/ kg of body weight for 14 successive days after inducing oxidative stress with aluminium chloride (100 mg/ kg of body weight) for 60 days. The lipid peroxidation level (TBARS) and antioxidant activities like Superoxide dismutase (SOD), Catalase (CAT) and reduced Glutathione (GSH) were estimated in rats. Results: AlCl3 induced rats showed increased the TBARS and decreased the antioxidant enzymes like Superoxide dismutase (SOD), Catalase (CAT) and reduced Glutathione (GSH) when compared with the control group. The EESZ at higher dose 300 mg/ kg of body weight animals were significantly (P < 0.001) reduced the TBARS and increased the anti oxidant enzymes Superoxide dismutase (SOD), Catalase (CAT) and reduced Glutathione (GSH) when compared with the AlCl3 treated group Conclusion: Findings of the present study revealed that Ethanolic extract from roots of Smilax zeylanica may be used as a significant source of natural antioxidant, which might be helpful in preventing the progress of various oxidative stresses.

The present study was designed to investigate the hypolipidemic effect of ethanolic extract from whole plant of Lactuca runcinata (DC.) in rats fed with atherogenic diet (AD). The acute toxicity study shows that the ethanolic extract are safe up to 2000 mg/kg, thus one tenth of this dose was consider as evaluation dose. Ethanolic extract of Lactuca runcinata was administered in doses of 200 and 400 mg/kg/day to rats fed with atherogenic diet to assess its possible lipid-lowering potential. There was a recognize increment in the body weight in AD fed group (p<0.001), which was reduced by the administration of ethanolic extract of L. runcinata (400 mg/kg). The elevated levels of total cholesterol, triglycerides, phospholipids, low-density lipoprotein (LDL-C) and very low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (VLDL-C) all along with decrease in plasma HDL-C were observed in group II rats fed with atherogenic diet. After treatment of ethanolic extract of L. runcinata, (400 mg/kg/day) the result showed a significant (p<0.001) decrement in body weight, plasma and tissue total cholesterol, triglycerides, phospholipids, plasma LDL-C and VLDL-C although with an increase in plasma HDL-C when compared to group II AD rats. The ethanolic extract of L. runcinata could protect against atherosclerosis and decrease the atherogenic index and cardiac risk ratio. This finding provides some biochemical basis for the use of ethanolic extract of whole plant of L. runcinata as hypolipidemic agent having preventive and therapeutic effect against hyperlipidemia.
