The article deals with the urgent issue of American English learning for IT-professionals under challenging conditions of the changeable economic situation in the world. Some statistical data on global education trends and its analysis are given to confirm the topicality of the problem. State-of-the-art trends in foreign language teaching in the context of global challenges are presented. It is stated that informal education environments, distant learning platforms, virtual reality environments, artificial intelligence applications and collaboration platforms are to be mastered by Ukrainian undergraduates. Certain peculiarities of choosing and studying British and American English course by students of IT-specialities at three Ukrainian universities are given: the course choice procedure, the reasons for course preference, and the syllabus content. The best technologies, applications and tools for classroom activities and independent learning are substantiated, specific examples of their application for British and American English course learning are presented. The transferability of the skills inculcated in the course participants through implementation of the certain tools is founded.
The relevance of this article is due to the need to form and develop algorithmic thinking of higher education students as the main requirement of the information society following 21st century skills and competences for new millennium learners. The purpose of the article is to consider algorithmic thinking as a new dimension of learning in higher education. The leading approach to the study of this problem is the analysis of methodological literature, and the experience of students, teachers, and academic staff. The article considers the essence, main properties, and characteristics of algorithmic thinking, suggests the universal sequence of algorithm development and model of algorithmic thinking as well as determines its importance for any subjects outside the information and communications technology area. The materials of the article can be useful for lecturers, professors, and other academic staff of universities and institutes when studying any subjects related to the basic and professional training of students.
Nowadays, the competency-based approach is becoming more and more traditional in Ukrainian education for every level – from preschool to postgraduate. Its focus is on two main concepts, “competency” and “competence”, interpreted in numerous ways in teaching and learning, which leads to inadequate educational results. Therefore, profound understanding and clear vision of the main concepts are very significant for the effective organization of the educational process. The article examines the ICT competency as a prerequisite for effective professional activities of pre-service teachers of mathematics and informatics in conditions of information society and digital world. The proper ICT competence level can considerably enhance both the teaching and learning processes, facilitate teachers’ professional development and their adaptation to changes in educational technologies. In this regard, defining the structure and content of ICT competency of pre-service teachers of mathematics and informatics is very important for clarification of educational process outcomes and students’ supporting personal characteristics needed to utilize ICT in their future job. The study introduces the conceptual model of structure of ICT competency and competence, which enlarges the focus of educational process to embrace value orientations and qualities of a person. In our opinion, the structure of ICT competency as well as of ICT competence should include the following criteria: knowledge, skills, habits, value orientations (motives, stimuli, values, interests and ambitions) and person’s qualities (abilities). Also, the article discusses the content of ICT competence of pre-service teachers of mathematics and informatics, based on the introduced model. ICT competence content data were acquired from empirical survey that involved students and practicing informatics teachers.
