The paper is grounded upon the fact that the amount of vocabulary in the English language is expending and growing quickly, as its constant development and enrichment are both an obligatory condition and a direct consequence of the progress in the particular branches of human activity. It has been accentuated that all terms, fulfilling the applied function of the tools of cognition and means of fixing scientific and technological progress, are unified and fixed in the language. Based on this, the classification of terms has been done according to normativity – non-normativity. Grounding on the number of already existing definitions, we understand a terminological phrase as a semantically integral word combination of two and more words connected by prepositions, or asyndetically. The correlation concerning the morphological structure of terms demonstrates a clearly expressed tendency of derivation being used as the main way of word-building in the development of sports terminological units. The conducted analysis of the studied mono- and multi-component terminological units showed that derivation is one of the most powerful sources of development of sport terminology. The corpus of sports terms can be described in accordance with the specialized spheres of use. The dynamic development of sports contributes to its belonging to the social area and gains a global meaning. Sport is not only a purely professional activity of a person, but also a part of the cultural, political and economic life of the country, an integral segment of traditions and self-consciousness of the people. Sport draws attention of lots of specialists and scholars, in particular linguists, who study its verbal representation and treat sports terminology as a prior one.
The article represents the results of the survey conducted among the group of university and high school teachers to establish the specific tendencies in online language teaching and learning within the COVID 19-affected environment. The study hypothesis presupposed verification of the thesis that language learning needs adjustment to new circumstances. During 2020-2021, the major platform adopted by Lesya Ukrainka Volyn National University has been MS Office. It provided the participants of learning process with necessary tools such as calendar planning, lecture and seminar moderation, data submission and storage as well as assessment options and statistics. Incorporating the platform required tutorials for teachers since there were certain issues with registration and running the MS Office programme on various gadgets. At the initial stages alternatives were allowed to be used for online classes. The survey was conducted and analysed by means of quantitative and descriptive methods and on the basis of continuous academic discussions. It was concluded that the teachers treated the challenges of new learning environment differently. Namely, the respondents were invited to rate the general effectiveness of constant online language or language related subject learning, characterise institutional support, specify the prioritised digital platform and share feedback regarding their satisfaction with the educational process within late 2020 – first half of 2021. The majority of the respondents denoted the satisfactory effectiveness of online English language system. The educational institution was reported to provide sufficient support on distant learning platforms. Roughly one third of the answers pointed at the use of several distant learning platforms. Zoom has been defined as the main teachers’ preference probably due to simplicity of installation and running flexibility on various gadgets for both sides. The most burning issues of online learning during the COVID-19 period were associated with internet connection and access.
This paper focuses on indirect means of verbalizing the phenomenon of pessimism in the texts of literary fairy tales from the point of view of Linguosemiotics. The study aims to determine the linguistic and semiotic means that create the pessimistic discourse of Oscar Wilde’s The Happy Prince and Other Tales collection. Pessimistic discourse is a person-centred discourse type represented by a complex system of means showing the speaker’s pessimistic worldview and is characterized by its goals, style, and tenor. The study contributes to developing Linguosemiotics, Psycholinguistics, and discourse studies and enriches the knowledge about idiostyles. The study is based on the semantic and lingo-semiotic analysis of the ontological phenomenon of pessimism in fictional texts, applying the content analysis to ensure the results’ reliability and validity. Furthermore, the four-staged methodological procedure used in this research allows us to define a general literary context of the analyzed works, select the research material, establish the frequency characteristics of the symbols as lingo-semiotic means that create the pessimistic tonality and discourse of Oscar Wilde’s collection The Happy Prince and Other Tales. The research determines the symbols of nature (seasons, flowers), material world (colours, things of everyday use), distancing, and death (as an ontological category) as verbal triggers of the author’s pessimism implemented in the narration by the contextual markers of basic, adjacent, and related qualitative features of pessimism, which reflect its social, psychological and cognitive aspects.
