During the COVID-19 pandemic, many manifestations of the disease appear in the oral, perioral and maxillofacial regions, either related to the virus itself or to the drugs used in the treatment. Aim: This study aims to identify the most common oral and perioral lesions in hospitalized patients with COVID-19 in the city of Mosul and their management; and also to evaluate the incidence and prevalence of these lesions. Material and Methods: Prospective study included 338 patients (138 females, 200 males) who had positive PCR results for SARS-CoV-2, with oral manifestations. All data were analyzed taking the means, frequencies, and percentage. Results: The most common lesions were colored lesions (31%) and stomatalgia (27%). The most common oral disorder and prior comorbidity combination was stomatalgia in patients with a history of hypertension. The most common associated systemic diseases were diabetes mellitus (19%) followed by hypertension (17%). Macular lesions had a higher response to drugs (40%) followed by stomatalgia (28%), in comparison with necrotic lesions (0%). Treatment of oral lesions included surgical interventions (26%) as well as conventional medical treatment (74%). Conclusion: Oral and perioral disorders during COVID-19 are transitory and more evidence is warranted to efficiently address these comorbidities in the short term.
Objectives The present study aims to evaluate the healing effect of a new topical paste formulation on mucosal wounds. Methods This study was conducted in 40 adult male rabbits. The animals were divided into two groups: a control group containing rabbits that were treated with only Orabase paste (comprising olive oil and beeswax) and an experimental group that included rabbits that were treated with Orabase paste containing hyaluronic acid, rosemary extract, and metronidazole. Each of these groups was randomly divided into four groups according to the observational period (post-treatment days 1, 3, 7, and 15). Further, biopsy samples for histological examination were obtained from the animals’ oral mucosal defects. Results We found that the new formulation (Orabase paste containing hyaluronic acid, rosemary extract, and metronidazole) had a stronger healing effect. The inflammation and re-epithelization scores at 3–7 days for the experimental group appeared superior in which ( P -values were 0.038 and 0.034 for inflammation and 0.046 and 0.025 for re-epithelization) respectively. Furthermore, the re-epithelization score on the 15th day for the new formulation was significant ( P ≤ 0.05), with the inflammatory response being milder. Conclusions Topical application of new paste formulation provided good therapeutic results. The new formulation was effective in resolving inflammation during specific phases of mucosal healing and significantly advanced wound healing at different stages. It also afforded a better healing response in terms of reduced wound contraction.

Material and methods: Nineteen cases with 24 implant were enrolled for standardization. Radiographical measurement undertaken by a periapical and OPG radiographs after implant placement, then after16 weeks later, again a second periapical and OPG radiographs were taken for measurements using Dimaxis 3.2.1. Software program to estimate marginal bone height of both sides of implant and its changes during times of evaluation. Results: 19 medically fit patients, male and female with age 22-65 years, twenty four implants with average bone loss 0.59 mm mesialy and 0.60 mm distally at T0 as standered base line in compared to 0.98mm mesialy and 1.11mm distally at T1as average bone loss. There was a significant bone resorption in both sides in relation of implant size and in comparison to time of placement and after 16 weeks according to statistical analysis. Conclusion: OPG and periapical views are a good parameter for evaluation of successful implant and monitoring of the prognosis and stability and durability, as these radiographs more available in most dental centers and clinics with less cost.
Background: Numerous types of cancer are of substantial medical and social concern, posing a major challenge to modern medicine. Chemotherapeutic drugs include the use of nucleosides, which are composed of nucleic acid and sugar. Objective: This study aims to assess the impact of systemic chemotherapeutic drugs at a therapeutic dose on the wound healing process of the oral mucosa. Material and Methods: 30 healthy rats were randomly divided into two main groups based on the study material, 15 rats in each group. Group A (control) was given a single dose of normal saline (1ml/kg, intraperitoneal), and Group B (study) a single injection of gemcitabine (50 mg /Kg, intraperitoneal). After anesthesia, a full-thickness soft tissue incision (0.5 cm length) on the right side of the buccal mucosa was made in the animals of both groups. Each group was subdivided according to the time of sacrifice into 3, 7, 14 days after surgery, at the end of the experimental periods, specimens were collected for histopathological study, and samples of blood were obtained from retro-orbital venous plexus and collected in microfuge tubes and levels of antioxidant enzymes were measured by ELISA. The data were analyzed statistically at a 0.05 level of significance. Results: Gemcitabine delayed the onset of wound cascade (inflammation and re-epithelization) which lead to worsening healing of the oral tissue; it also resulted in a decrease of the antioxidant activity of glutathione peroxidase and catalase, as well as activated caspase 3, which induces cell apoptosis. Conclusion: Gemcitabine showed negative feedback on oral tissue wound healing through delayed wound healing cascade and by inducing apoptosis.
Platelets contain a reservoir of growth factors that have numerous biological activities such as assisting in chemotaxis, cell differentiation, proliferation, and angiogenesis which all are pivotal in the wound healing process. From this, platelet concentrates have been described in the literature beginning from the first generation to the second generation both of which have a beneficial impact on the healing of soft and hard tissue following oral surgical procedures. The following review will illustrate the evolution of platelet concentrates and the current classification of the marketed products available.
