These results may have important public health implications, since the general population is also exposed to these viruses. Elevated risks were observed for non-poultry-related occupational exposures such as working in a stockyard, working in a chemical plant, use of chemicals to kill moulds, and working in plants where plastic products were manufactured. These preliminary findings indicate that full scale epidemiological studies of adequate statistical power are needed to examine the role of occupational exposures in cancer occurrence in poultry workers.
Twenty four of 30 patients with chronic plaque psoriasis completed a double-blind randomized paired comparison of dithranol in Lassar's paste versus dithranol and fluocinonide in Lassar's paste. There was a more rapid reduction in severity of the psoriasis on the side treated with the dithranol and fluocinonide mixture, but no difference in the final time to clearance between the two sides. There were fewer burning episodes on the side treated with dithranol and fluocinonide and greater staining of the skin. Of the 20 patients who were subsequently followed up for up to 3 months, 11 had relapsed more on the side treated with dithranol and fluocinonide, two on the side treated with dithranol alone and in seven there was no appreciable difference. It was concluded that the addition of a topical steroid to a conventional dithranol regimen produced more rapid initial clearance and less burning, but more rapid relapse of the psoriasis.
Summary A health education study utilizing a homework assignment was carried out in a private secondary school in Bangalore, South India, to determine whether health information about leprosy would be transferred from children to their families. After a pre-test questionnaire on knowledge and attitude about leprosy was administered to 3 Standard VII classes and their family members, a different comprehensive health education session was given to each class: (i) leprosy plus a homework assignment; (ii) leprosy alone; and (iii) tuberculosis alone.' A post-test questionnaire was administered to all participants I month later. Of the 118 children and 229 family members who entered the study, almost 80% of the participants completed it. The children in the leprosy-educated groups showed significant improvement in knowledge compared with controls, but no change in their attitude towards leprosy. Although post-test responses of household members showed modest improvement in knowledge about leprosy, attitudes remained the same or worsened. The homework assignment did not appear to improve the transmission of health information to household members. This study showed that the knowledge level of family members in South India could be improved modestly by educating their children about leprosy. However, attitudes towards leprosy were unaffected or worsened.
An infant with congenital hypertrichosis lanuginosa (CHL) and congenital glaucoma is presented. Both conditions are rare and have not been previously reported to occur in association.
We report the development of pseudoainhum in a patient with erythropoietic protoporphyria, the first report, to our knowledge, of these two unusual conditions occurring together. An excellent cosmetic and functional result was achieved with a Z plasty.
