Body fat distribution seems to have different effects in cardiovascular diseases (CVD). We aimed to estimate the associations between lower limbs and trunk fat ratio and the 10-year CVD risk, and isolated risk factors in men and women. A total of 10,917 participants from ELSA-Brasil were eligible for this cross-sectional study. Associations between lower limb/trunk fat ratio with the percentage of 10-year CVD risk - according to the Framingham Risk Score - and its risk factors (systolic blood pressure, total cholesterol and HDL-cholesterol, diabetes, and use of antihypertensive medication) were performed using generalized linear models, linear and logistic regressions. All analyses were stratified by gender and adjustments were made by age, self-reported skin color, educational attainment, alcohol consumption, leisure physical activity, hypolipidemic drug use and, for women, menopausal status. In this study, 55.91% were women, with a mean age of 52.68 (SD = 6.57) years. A higher lower limb/trunk fat ratio was related to lower 10-year CVD risk, as well as a reduction in systolic blood pressure, total cholesterol, and antihypertensive drug use, also an increasing HDL-cholesterol in both genders, but this relationship was stronger in women. Besides, a protective relationship to diabetes was observed in women. Higher fat accumulation in the lower body, when compared to the trunk, seems to have a lower risk of CVD and associated risk factors - even in the presence of fat in the abdominal region - with women presenting lower risks than men.
Investigating the relationship between exposure to chemical and biological agents at work and the occurrence of cardiovascular diseases in a Brazilian national health survey. Methods: A cross-sectional study using the database of 36.442 participants from the Brazilian National Health Survey. Logistic Regression analysis was performed for multivariable models. Results: After adjustments for key confounders, we observed that those individuals exposed to chemical agents and biological materials at work had 62% (95% CI: 1.20; 2.20) and 66% (95% CI: 1.03; 2.65), respectively, higher odds of having cardiovascular disease compared to employed individuals who did not report exposure to biological materials/chemical agents at work. Conclusion: This study draws attention to the role of chemical and biological risks in the occurrence of cardiovascular diseases. In this sense, it is necessary developing systematic and intersectoral actions for Workers' Health Surveillance to promote health and prevent chronic non-communicable diseases.
Introdução: A dengue é uma arbovirose, transmitida para o homem através da picada do mosquito Aedes aegypti, e que acomete grande número de indivíduos no mundo. Nos últimos 50 anos, junto com o aumento da expansão geográfica, a incidência de dengue aumentou aproximadamente 30 vezes. Ao longo dos anos, diversas medidas de combate à dengue foram implementadas, a partir daí, no ano de 2004 foi possível evidenciar que houve redução de 290% nos casos de dengue em relação ao ano anterior. Objetivo: Descrever o conhecimento de escolares do Rio Grande do Sul sobre o tema dengue. Métodos: Estudo com abordagem quantitativa do tipo descritiva realizado com jovens alunos da rede pública de educação da cidade de Tupãnciretã, por meio de um questionário estruturado. Resultados: Evidenciou-se que a maioria dos alunos tinha conhecimento sobre como a dengue é transmitida, sendo que 35% acreditavam que a fêmea do mosquito transmite a doença e ainda, 58,8% afirmaram que conseguem reconhecer o mosquito. Uma parcela dos alunos acredita que o mosquito pica preferencialmente durante o dia, onde a principal forma de transmissão selecionada foi “O mosquito pica uma pessoa doente e transmite a doença à outra pessoa” e os principais sintomas assinalados foram febre, dor de cabeça e cansaço. Conclusão: O estudo demonstrou que boa parte dos jovens possuem conhecimentos sobre a dengue, entretanto, ainda há crianças e adolescentes que não conhecem o assunto, trazendo à tona a importância deste tema nas campanhas de saúde.
