Purpose-This study aims at finding out the implementation of English for specific purposes (ESP) course and identifying the challenges faced by English lecturers in designing an ESP course for first-year students in the Engineering Faculty of Malikussaleh University. Methodology-This study implements qualitative research through interviews as a means of data collection. Findings-This study addresses the application of an ESP course and identifies the challenges appeared during the stages of designing. The study reveals that an ESP course is not completely implemented. In fact, the course provided little ESP contents. The paper also reveals that, in terms of challenges, each stage of design presents its own challenge. To design an ESP course involves five crucial stages, that is, needs analysis, syllabus, material, teaching, and evaluation. Teachers encounter challenges as the design process takes place. Research Limitations/Implications-The present study provides an account of how English teachers view challenges in implementing a complete ESP course. However, further research should be conducted to discover the possibility of application of ESP course in national universities in Indonesia. Practical Implications-This paper offers solutions in order to make the implementation of ESP course feasible in the university. Originality/Value-There have not been any research in ESP application for engineering students in Malikussaleh University.
Penelitian dilakukan untuk mengetahui: (1) Menganalisis kualitas air Sungai Martapura sebelum tercemar oleh industri pengolahan sagu. (2) Menganalisis kualitas air limbah industri pengolahan sagu yang dibuang ke Sungai Martapura. (3) Menganalisis dampak limbah cair industri pengolahan sagu terhadap kualitas air Sungai Martapura. Penelitian mengambil sampel di tiga titik yaitu Air Sungai Martapura, Inlet Industri Pengolahan Sagu Didi dan Outlet (air sungai martapura yang tercampur air limbah), pengambilan sampel dilakukan selama dua hari dan hasil pengambilan sampel air dilakukan pengujian kualitas air dilaboratorium. Hasil uji laboratorium kemudian diolah dengan menggunakan analisis deskriptif kuantitatif dengan membandingkan hasil uji laboratorium dengan Peraturan Gubernur Kalimantan Selatan tentang Standar Baku Mutu Limbah Cair. Hasil penelitian selama dua hari menunjukkan bahwa pada titik sampel Inlet hari pertama pengambilan sampel TSS 192,6 mg/l, BOD 226,8 mg/l dan COD 540 mg/l dan hari kedua pengambilan sampel BOD 151,5 mg/l, COD 433 mg/l dan Sulfida 1,55 mg/l. Limbah cair sagu yang di buang ke anak sungai masih dalam batas dapat dinetralkan oleh anak sungai tersebut sehingga belum menggangu tingkat pencemarannya.
The Corona Virus Disease (COVID-19) pandemic which has an impact on the economy is no exception to the community around the UNIMAL Faculty of Agriculture. The COVID-19 pandemic condition in Aceh caused UNIMAL to carry out online/online-based lecture activities according to the direction of the Ministry of Education and Culture. Campus activities with an online system cause students to carry out the learning process from their home area so they are not in the environment around UNIMAL. The regulation of the online learning system due to the Corona Virus Disease (COVID-19) Pandemic which dealt a tremendous blow to the economy of the community around the UNIMAL Faculty of Agriculture as traders in the UNIMAL environment and providers of rental houses for students. Then, the lack of knowledge of housewives in East Reulet about what business prospects can be run and the cleanliness and food safety of processed products that need to be realized for public health are the basis for this activity to be carried out. The location of the community service was taken around the UNIMAL Faculty of Agriculture Institution, namely Gampong Reulet Timur, North Aceh Regency. At the preparation stage, the implementation of activities begins with increasing coordination and synergistic cooperation between the parties involved, namely Academic Activists (Lecturers) and the targeted community groups. The implementation methodology is designed for mentors in the form of a participatory approach and refers to the adult learning process (adult-learning), which consists of: (1) Providing information related to sauce processing, (2) assignment or direct practice of sauce processing.
Present tense and past tense are prominent as basic general knowledge of English. Because present tense and past tense are essential parts of predicate of the sentences, the English learners are required to have adequate knowledge of present tense and past tense to enable them to construct effective sentences when expressing their idea in writing or in speaking. However most of the studens still have weakness of understanding on present tense and past tense. It becomes crucial issue for students when they construct their own sentences in writing and speaking. The aims of this research are 1) how the focused divided verb teaching method can improve students' ability in writing and speaking? 2) how the teaching method improves student's comprehension on present tense and past tense? This is classroom-based research that employs explicit teaching approach. The data is gathered based on a semi-structured interview and by analyzing documents of students' worksheets. The documents are students' paper test, prior and after the teaching method applied. The data is analysized quatitatively and qualitatively. The result of the study indicates that the teaching method enhances the students' comprehension of present tense and past tense and improves the students' ability in writing and speaking.
Bahasa Inggris merupakan media komunikasi yang digunakan secara Internasional untuk berinteraksi dengan orang lain. Beberapa tahun belakangan ini, kebutuhan penguasaan bahasa Inggris menunjukkan peningkatan yang sangat signifikan, bahkan dibeberapa negara, bahasa Inggris dijadikan sebagai bahasa kedua setelah bahasa nasional. Penelitian ini dilaksanakan di Kecamatan Muara Batu Kabupaten Aceh Utara dengan tujuan untuk mengetahui kemampuan bahasa Inggris anak sekolah dasar di Kecamatan Muara Batu Kabuoaten Aceh Utara. Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah metode observasi dengan menguji kemampuan anak-anak secara langsung (Direct Method) yang terdiri dari uji kemampuan membaca (Reading), menulis (Writing), mendengar (Listening) dan berbicara (Speaking). Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa penguasaan bahasa Inggris anak-anak usia Sekolah Dasar umur 9 sampai 12 tahun di Kecamatan Muara Batu Kabupaten Aceh Utara memiliki kemampuan bahasa Inggris yang baik dengan rata-rata kemampuan anak-anak 30 sampai 40% pada semua aspek uji yaitu Reading, Writing, Listening dan Speaking.
