The research focuses on a certain aspect of political activity of young people – the image of the social future. The target sector is young people who actively manifest themselves in the social and political sphere: pro-government and opposition-minded groups of young people. The image of the social future is considered as one of the key components of the social well-being of young people reflecting their ideals and expectations. At the same time, the choice of the strategy of active political involvement of young people is analyzed through the prism of subjective states – mood, well-being, expectations. Two groups of respondents took part in the survey: activists of pro-government organizations, as well as regional youth parliaments, governments, youth public chambers (n = 300); representatives of modern youth protest, primarily volunteers of the "Progress party" and "Libertarian party" (n = 300). Ccomparing the images of the desired and expected future of politically active youth, a mismatch between their social ideals and the expected direction of events in the future was revealed. It mainly concerns the prospects for economic development and is much more pronounced among opposition activists. For opposition youth, the contradiction between the desired and expected future, in addition to the dissonance in economic development, affects the sphere of legal relations: an important landmark is a humanistic society tolerant of minorities, and the most likely expected event is the restriction of the rights and freedoms of citizens. The imbalance between social ideals and social expectations causes pessimistic attitudes among young people and dissatisfaction with the current situation in various spheres of life. Such circumstances of the choice of the strategy of political participation as orientation to the social ideal, ideological and political identification, readiness for conflict behavior are revealed. All of them simultaneously act as watershed lines between groups of pro-government and opposition activists. The image of the social future determines the choice of the strategy of political participation implemented by young people. "Active adaptation", more typical for a group of pro-government youth, involves the use of the mechanisms proposed by the authorities to engage them in politics. The "activist-protest" strategy is implemented by opposition-minded youth, its important indicator is the willingness to go to conflict in various life situations. As a forecast, the authors put forward the following thesis: with the declining level of social well-being, among politically active youth, the number of transitions from state-approved forms of political participation to protest ones will increase.

Survey data show a change in attitudes toward politics among young Russians, a tendency to be apolitical, and an increasing pragmatism. More generally, political activism as a goal of upbringing and propaganda in Russia is being replaced by the idea of the culture of citizenship. In the present article, a civil society is viewed as the qualitative state of the social organism as the result of the social actions of individuals in the framework of the particular culture. Such a representation is based on the sociocultural approach, and it finds expression in the formulation of the terms "culture of civic-mindedness" and "culture of citizenship." The paper provides the study outcomes with respect to the political activism process by young people as illustrated by the comparative analysis of campaigns by young activists of pro-governmental and opposition political organizations of the Urals Federal District. The conclusions made by the authors are based on the results of the quantitative survey of activists from the pro-governmental youth socio-political organizations (N = 304) and non-systematic opposition activists (N = 298), as well as on informal interviews with young representatives of political parties and movements (22 interviews). According to the findings, the crucial role in motivating the political participation of young activists is played by value-based sociocentric attitudes: a sense of civic responsibility and a strive for a more equitable society. Pragmatic attitudes towards career and self-fulfilment in the socio-political sphere are of less importance. Negative social well-being is typical for both groups of respondents, but it is stronger among opposition-minded young people and is the major motivator for them to be engaged with politics. The significant differences between the pro-government and opposition activists in the course of their political self-identification have been identified: pro-government activists are characterized by the vague and indefinite ideological views, while the ideological orientation of opposition youth is more clearly defined and focused mainly on liberalism. The common characteristic of the idea regarding the ideal social structure for both groups of activists is a high standard of living. However, pro-government and opposition activists significantly differ in their views regarding other ideas about the social ideal: opposition-minded young people put a greater focus on the role of information technologies, the market economy, tolerance for minorities, and humanism, while pro-government activists much more often refer to the significance of a strong government and the country’s international credibility. These differences in ideas regarding the goals of political participation on the background of the negative social well-being of varying degrees determine the choice of relevant forms of political activities by young people.
