SLJMMARY 1) Acidity constants of 2,3,4,5,6-d5-, 2,4,6-d3-and 3,5-d2-anilinium ion, of 2,6-d2-4-toluidinium and 4-d-2,6-xylidinium ion have been measured in aqueous solution.2) Deuterium substitution of the benzene nucleus decreases the acidity of anilinium ions. A statistical treatment shows that the position of the deuterium atoms has a decisive influence on the acidity constants. The results are consistent with three of the four examined hypotheses of the origin of the measured isotope effects.Technisch-chemisches Laboratorium Eidg. Technische Hochschule Zurich --

scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
