This paper aims to test the reliability and validity of the Turkish adaptation of DeBaryshe and Binder's Parent Reading Belief Inventory (PRBI) and to investigate parents' literacy beliefs. The primary focus of this paper is to explore parents' beliefs and practices and their relatedness on the emergent literacy of their children aged 3-7 (M=69.8 months; SD= 9.33 months). As data collection tools, we availed ourselves of the Parent Reading Belief Inventory,(PRBI), Home Literacy Inventory (HLI) and Child Literacy Behaviours (CLB). In addition, the Personal Information Form, prepared by the researchers, was utilized. Moreover, confirmatory factor analyses were performed on samples of parents from Adana, a city in southern Turkey (N= 952). The study showed that a seven-factor structure in the original form of the PRBI was validated , excluding items 8, 30 and 31. Consistent with the results of the confirmatory factor analysis and reliability analysis, it can be concluded that the PRBI is a valid and reliable tool to investigate the process of parents' literacy activities with their children in Turkey.
The skill of writing numerals necessitates a certain developmental maturity. Studying the age at which children start to develop this skill and assessing problems they encounter while writing numerals should give direction to their training. From 8 schools a total of 267 children, ages 60 to 89 mo., were asked to write the numerals 1 to 9. Analysis showed that 80% of the children wrote most of the numerals correctly, 15% wrote inverted numerals, 2.0% wrote some numerals as letters, and 4% did not write certain numerals at all. In addition, 64% of children ages 60 to 65 mo. gave correct responses, and the perception of correct responses increased across age groups until 95% were correct in the group who were 84 to 89 mo. There was no significant difference between girls and boys in these writing skills.
Araştırmanın birinci amacı, Bilişsel Edebi Yaklaşım çerçevesinde resimli öykü kitaplarındaki karakterlerin duygu ifadelerini, ikincisi ise bu duygu ifadelerinin 60-72 aylık çocuklardaki yansımasının incelenmesidir. Birinci çalışma grubu amaçlı örnekleme yöntemiyle seçilmiş 13 resimli öykü kitabından, ikinci çalışma ise okul öncesi eğitim alan 10 çocuktan oluşmaktadır. Birinci çalışmanın verileri doküman inceleme yöntemiyle toplanmış, içerik analizi yöntemiyle analiz edilmiştir. İkinci çalışmanın verileri yarı yapılandırılmış görüşme yöntemiyle toplanmış, içerik analizi yöntemiyle analiz edilmiştir. Birinci çalışmanın sonuçları altı kitabın resimlerinin öyküdeki karakterlerin zihinsel durumlarını fark etmeye ve anlamaya olanak sağladığını göstermiştir. İkinci araştırmanın bulguları, Bilişsel Edebi Yaklaşım açısından karakterlerin duygularını iyi yansıtan kitaplarda çocukların öykü karakterleriyle kolayca empati kurabildiğini göstermiştir.
