Mediational models of risk and protection were tested to predict longitudinally both externalizing and internalizing behaviors in young children, with conflicted marital attitude and transgenerational, authoritarian vs. authoritative parenting as predictors. Drawn from two private and one public schools, the sample consisted of 25 boys and 25 girls with 4 and 5 years of age, and their respective mothers. Bivariate Pearson correlations and multiple regressions showed intergenerational transmission for the authoritarian style, but not for the authoritative style, mediated by a conflicted attitude toward marriage. The maternal authoritarian style predicted both externalizing and internalizing behaviors, whereas the conflicted marital attitude predicted only externalizing behavior. Although significant, the additive model did not yield significant effects for each factor on externalizing behavior. But when the relation between authoritarian parenting and conflicted marital attitude were taken into account, significant main effects were found for both factors on externalizing behavior. The finding of significant results only in the risk model is discussed from both theoretical and methodological standpoints.
The aim of this study was to know the meanings of care attributed by workers who work in a Long Term Care Institution for the Elderly to institutionalized people with mental disorders. Qualitative study conducted in a Long-term Care Institution for the Elderly in the interior of Rio Grande do Sul. 19 semi-structured interviews were conducted with workers from June to September 2015, respecting the ethical principles of the National Health Council. Thematic categories proposed by Minayo emerged from the following categories: meanings attributed to care to the person with mental disorder and meaning of care related to daily challenges. The results showed perceptions of care focused on humanization, encouraging the autonomy of people with mental disorders, and also care based on control and monitoring. There was also evidence of a theoretical-practical unpreparedness of the worker for mental health care. It is concluded that care is perceived by the workers of the institution under study in a polysemic way, and still needs theoretical and practical deepening regarding mental health issues.
This review presents an overview of recent research on alcoholism in order to characterize the predominant types of research. From the Scopus database, searches were conducted using the keywords "relapse" and "alcohol". The articles were classified according to the theoretical and methodological approach used. Quantitative studies are prevalent, however, in relation to the theoretical approach, the cognitive-behavioral, neurological and epidemiological approaches stand out, which indicates a predominance of the biomedical perspective. In this perspective are discussed both the limitations of the studies and the effectiveness of treatments which are based on them, reinforcing the need for greater investment in qualitative research and in the assimilation of the contribution of social sciences to the subject.Descriptors: Alcoholism; Recurrence; Scientific and Technical Publications; Therapeutics.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
