Rectal administration of methohexitone is an effective technique for the induction of anaesthesia in young children and several doses and concentrations of the drug have been used.~-6 However, when methohexitone is administered as a ten per cent solution in the usual clinical doses approximately 15 per cent of patients do not fall asleep, 3-6 This unpredictability may occur because of variation in the absorption or systemic availability of the drug. Many factors affect absorption and distribution of rectally administered medications including drug formulation, site of absorption within the rectum, and concentration and volume of the solution administered. 7's
