Generally, Plants have immense potential in the wounds management and treatment.In Chinese herbology, Hibiscus plant is a potent herb and have a good medicinal values but not scientifically approached. The present study aims to investigate the wound healing and antimicrobial activity of ethanolic extract of Hibiscus hirtus Linn.(HH). Wound healing activity was carried out by excision, incision and burn wound models. Antimicrobial activity was determined by cup plate method. Healing rate was assessed from the rate of wound contraction, epithelialization rate, tensile strength, hexosamine and hydroxyproline content. From the obtained results, it was indicated that the wound contraction and increased tensile strength of Hibiscus hirtus extract exhibits potent wound healing capacity. Hexosamine and hydroxyproline expression were also correlative with the pattern of healing observed. Histological observation indicates that the wounds treated with Hibiscus hirtus extract and povidone iodine have reduced scar formation and enhances fibroblast proliferation, angiogenesis, keratinization and epithelialization. The Hibiscus hirtus extract has excellent antimicrobial activity against the various organisms. Wound healing activity of our ethanolic extract of Hibiscus hirtus has shown the good effect which has proved by different physical, histological, biochemical parameters. Significant antimicrobial activity shown may be due to major active constituents present in plant.
In the present study, we evaluated the antiobesity and hypolipidemic activities of ethanolic, ethyl acetate and hexane extracts of Tecoma gaudichaudi flowers in rat models.Anti-obesity activity of ethanolic, ethyl acetate and hexane extracts (200 & 400 mg/kg)of Tecoma gaudichaudi flowers were evaluated in rats fed with monosodium glutamate (8 mg/gm) diet. Experimental parameters like body weight, food consumption, locomotor behavior, serum glucose, triglyceride, total cholesterol, high density lipoprotein (HDL), low density lipoprotein (LDL) and very low density lipoprotein (VLDL) were studied for evaluating the anti-obesity activity of ethanolic extract (EE), ethyl acetate extract (EAE) and hexane extracts (HE) of Tecoma gaudichaudi flowers and orlistat (5mg/kg). There was a significant decrease of total cholesterol, total triglycerides and LDL-C and a significant increase of HDL-C level in hyperlipidemic rats after four-week administration of different extracts of Tecoma gaudichaudi flowers. Treatment with ethanolic extract (EE), ethyl acetate extract (EAE) and hexane extracts (HE) of Tecoma gaudichaudi exhibited antihyperlipidemic properties which might lead to improvement of serum lipid profile.
Aim: The present investigation deals with the preliminary phytochemical screening, in vitro antioxidant, and in vivo antidepressant activity of ethanolic leaf extract of Antigonon leptopus. Materials and Methods: In vitro antioxidant activity was evaluated using the parameters such as free radical scavenging using phosphomolybdenum antioxidant assay, nitric oxide scavenging activity, and hydrogen peroxide scavenging. Ascorbic acid (AA) with the same concentration was used as an standard antioxidant. Extract was investigated further for its antidepressant activity using the forced swim test, tail suspension test, and locomotor activity using digital photoactometer. AA, fluoxetine (10 mg/kg), and imipramine (4 mg/kg, p.o) were used as reference drugs for comparison in the antioxidant and antidepressant experiments, respectively. Results and Discussions: Preliminary phytochemical screening of the extracts revealed the presence of alkaloids, carbohydrates, glycosides, phenolic compounds, tannins, saponins, and flavonoids. The presence of these bioactive constituents is associated with the antioxidant and antidepressant activity of the plant. The IC 50 values of nitric oxide and hydrogen peroxide radicals were found to be 216 and 20.8 ug/ml for extract and 24.54 and 33.1 ug/ml for AA. It has been observed from our study that the extract showed significant (P < 0.01) reduction in immobility in tail suspension and forced swim model of depression comparable to imipramine. In locomotor activity testing, it showed psychostimulant effect comparable to that of standard fluoxetine. Conclusion: The results indicated that dose-dependent in vitro antioxidant activity against phosphomolybdenum antioxidant assay, nitric oxide scavenging activity, and hydrogen peroxide scavenging by ethanolic leaf extract of A. leptopus comparable with that of standard AA. The antioxidant and antidepressant effect of A. leptopus seems to be mediated due to the presence of various phytochemical constituents.
In vitro antioxidant and in vivo hepatoprotective activities of Cleome gynandra ethanolic leaf and root extracts were assessed. In vitro antioxidant activity was carried by DPPH, Nitric oxide, hydroxyl radical and phosphomolybdenum assays. Hepatoprotective activity was evaluated by Carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) induced hepatotoxicity in albino rats.The animals were divided into seven groups (Four test groups - Ethanolic Leaf and Root Extracts of Cleome gynandra of 100 mg/kg and 200 mg/kg, standard silymarin (100 mg/kg), toxic control-carbon tetrachloride and vehicle). On the eight day, the blood was collected and parameters like serum glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase (SGOT), Serum glutamic pyruvic transaminase (SGPT), Alkaline phosphatase (ALP) and Total bilirubin (TB) were estimated. Significant antioxidant status with good IC50 values similar to standard ascorbic acid was obtained. A significant decrease in liver enzymes was observed in test groups comparable to silymarin. From the results obtained, ethanolic leaf extract has contributed better hepatoprotection compared with root extract in experimental rats.
