Pouring of medicated Kwatha (Decoction) or oil on forehead is known as Shirodhara. Shirodhara is also a type of Bahya Snehana (external oleation therapy) as mentioned in Ayurveda. Shirodhara is mainly indicated in neurological and psychosomatic disorders. Today's modern life style is full of stress and thus interfering the individual daily function. In current era the problems like insomnia, headache, facial paralysis, scalp psoriasis, hair fall etc. are the most common and challenging conditions. But till now effective management for these complaints are still lacking. Hence it is the need of time to find out the safe and effective treatment modalities for these diseases. Thus an effort is made to rule out the efficacy of Shirodhara in different psychological disorder. The apparent mode of action of this procedure is not understood. Ayurveda mainly highlighted the outcomes of the procedure rather than its action. So a review of Samhita, Chikitsa Grantha, Nighantus and Ayurveda text with regard to Shirodhara was conducted. Indication and Contraindication and therapeutic efficacy of Shirodhara were noted during the study.
In India an estimated 0.8% of the population is suffering from Psoriasis. It is a papulo-squamous disorder of the skin, characterized by sharply defined erythemato-squamous lesions. It is chronic and is well known for its course of remissions and exacerbations. The exact etiology is still unknown. This condition is comparable with Mandala Kushtha in Ayurvedic system of medicine. Shodhana procedures are reliable to control the disease. Forty patients, fulfilling the inclusion criteria, were selected and randomly divided into four groups with 10 patients in each group. In Group A, Vamana and Virechana was administered once during the trial period. In Group B, Vamana and Virechana followed by Dermo-care in the dose of 5 g twice a day for the period of 2 months. In Group C, only Dermo-care was administered. In Group D, Tab. Neotrexate (Methotrexate) 7.5 mg/week was given under the supervision of dermatologist. Marked improvement was observed in 10% of the patients in Group B. Moderate improvement was observed in 20% of the patients in Group A, 90% in Group B, and 80% in Group D. Diabetes mellitus refers to a group of common metabolic disorders that share the phenotype of hyperglycemia. Due to the burden of type 2 diabetes and its complications, much attention has been given to prevention, beginning with identifying at-risk individuals prior to diagnosis. Prediabetes is one of the major clinically entity, striking resemblance with that of Prameha in Ayurveda and Diabetes Mellitus having close resemblance with Madhumeha as described in Ayurveda. Prameha is of 20 types based on the type of urination and on the basis of Dosha predominance it is categorized namely as Kaphaja, Pittaja and Vataja Prameha. Prameha Nidana are of 2 types -Sahaja (hereditary) and Apathya Nimitaja (acquired). Apathya Nimitaja (Acquired) is further of three types-Kaphakara, Pittakara and Vatakara. Etiological factors of Prameha can also be categorized into Samanya Nidana (General factors) and Vishesha Nidana (Specific factors). If different clinical stages of Prameha (Prediabetes) are not managed in due time it may lead to Madhumeha(diabetes). Nidana Parivarjana plays a first step in the fight against any disease. The study of Nidana (etiological factors) reveals the rich knowledge of the Ayurveda in the prevention of Diabetes by following Nidana Parivarjana.
ksheerdhooma is a sort of Swedana that falls under the umbrella of Nadi Sweda and Bashpa Swedana. A decoction of herbal medicines and cow's milk is blended and heated in this therapy. Steam vapours arise from the tube and are applied to the afflicted area of the patient's body or the entire body. It is commonly used to treat Jatrurdhwagata Vata Vyadhi. Swedana is also known as dhuma because steam is breathed via a gaping mouth. However, the process is similar to Swedana's. It can be classified as bashpa sweda, in which the face is fomented by vapours of the decoction. Ksheera dhuma with milk decoction vapours causes the body part to sweat, which opens the pores. This aids in the relief of inflammation and stiffness in the afflicted areas. This stimulates nerve endings and opens micro channels beneath the skin. Ksheera Dhooma is a Snigdha variant of Nadi Sweda, and its mode of action is determined by the drug used for therapy as well as procedural effects. Ksheerdhooma is an important swedana procedure, thus in this publication, we strive to establish a standard operative process and determine the efficacy of ksheerdhooma.
The five-bio cleansing/detoxifying procedures (Panchakarma procedures/ Samshodhan Chikitsa) advocated in Ayurveda are Vaman(Therapeutic emesis), Virechan(Therapeutic Purgation), Basti (Medicated Enema), Nasya (Infiltration of medications through nostrils), and Raktamokshana(Bloodletting by different methods). It contains both therapeutic and preventative as well as promotional properties. This Basti therapy also helps to relieve tension in the body and mind, hence improving one's quality of life.
