Following detection of Schistosoma mansoni in a 12 years old boy who had both schistosomal polyposis and periportal fibrosis with hepatosplenomegaly, epidemiological studies to confirm local transmission were performed in his and 30 other villages in Assiut Governorate, Egypt. The index case's brother and 6 of 380 inhabitants of his village who provided stool specimens were infected with S. mansoni and a farmer with dysentery and hepatosplenomegaly had a positive rectal snip biopsy. All had hepatic abnormalities on ultrasound examination. Two of 221 schoolchildren in another village had mixed infections with S. mansoni and S. haematobium; 17 others had only S. haematobium. None of 419 inhabitants living near the infected boys had S. mansoni infection. Snails from canals and drains near both villages were netted, identified, counted and checked for infection: in the second village one of 1039 Bulinus truncatus was infected with Schistosoma sp. but none of 859 Biomphalaria alexandrina was infected. Schistosomiasis mansoni is being focally transmitted in 2 villages in Assiut Governorate and appears to be spreading from Lower to Middle and Upper Egypt. We believe B. alexandrina, which has been present in some of the waterways for at least 15 years, were infected recently by local inhabitants returning from Iraq or by cattle traders or military recruits from the Delta.
The growth of the manufacturing industry in Indonesia affects on the demand of automotive parts. This study aims see the mechanical properties of organic brake canvas made from durian fruit skin and teak leaves. Composite making was done by smoothing durian fruit and teak leaves to become powder. The resulting powder was filtered with mesh 60 so that the particle size is the same so as to facilitate mixing. After that, simple mixing with other ingredients such as magnesium oxide and polyester resin is carried out. The printing process was carried out with a hydraulic press with a load of 4 tons for 3 hours. The brake canvas produced were tested for hardness, wear resistance, and absorbency by varying the percentage composition of the powder of durian fruit fiber and teak leaves. There are five variations in the percentage of composite material composition tested. The results obtained the percentage of the most optimum composition that has a value of hardness, wear wear resistance, and absorption capacity close to the value of the Indonesian National Standard (SNI 09-0143).
This paper aims to analyse the progressive meaning of jihad not only as religious discourses but also teaching practised by Indonesian Muslim from long time ago until the reformed era. In this political transition to democracy, Indonesian government has encountered many ideologies including transnational Islamic movements that promote biased idea of jihad containing a lot of tension, hatred, and violence such as war, exclusive, intolerance, monolithic point of view, and single truth claim. These ideas have been extremely different from Indonesian Muslim scholars and cleric thought that have interpreted jihad locally and has been practised harmoniously for long time. Therefore to identify the concept of jihad in democratic era will be as a solution of contemporary development of Indonesian Islam as well as promoting harmonious coexistence. Method used in this research is narrative analysis, written and spoken texts are categorised as data. The data are focused on the concept of jihad which is classified into moderate jihad and immoderate jihad as constructed by Indonesian Muslim scholars especially those who are affiliated with Muhammadiyah and Nahdltul Ulama (NU). Finding of this research is that jihad for Indonesian Muslim perspectives (both Muhammadiyah and Nahdlatul Ulama) in the post reformed era of Indonesian polity is defined as any struggle or effort made with the right faith and with the right intention in order to strengthen the word of truth, to bring about peace, to help humanity without the involvement or greed of personal gain, fame, and other fortunes that continue until the end of the day
