Mangosteen is one of Indonesia’s native fruit plants that has very large export potential, but at this time the age of mangosteen plants in smallholder plantations has reached more than ten years, so fulfilment of mangosteen export needs will be hindered. This study was aimed to identify the morphological characteristics of mangosteen plants and as a conservation material in several sub-districts (Wampu, Stabat and Tanjung Pura) in Langkat district of North Sumatra, Indonesia, with an accidental sampling survey based on the IPGRI (International Plant Genetic Resources Institute) mangosteen descriptor guide. The result showed that there were 51 characters closely related i.e. (growth, leaf, flower, fruit and seed descriptors) at E16 and E17 was 29.907, with 31 characters in common, and the furthest relationship was found between E1 and E3 with dissimilarity value 138.421 with 21 characters in common.
Desa Gunung Serawan, Kecamatan Bandar Masilam terletak sekitar 145 km dari kota Medan. Sebagian masyarakat yang memiliki ladang dan lahan pekarangan telah memanfaatkan dengan menanami kakao. Kualitas biji kakao yang dihasilkan masih rendah sehingga nilai jualnya juga rendah. Akibatnya pendapatan petani dari kebun kakao juga masih rendah. Rendahnya kualitas biji kakao antara lain bersumber dari proses fermentasi yang kurang sempurna serta proses pengeringan yang kurang baik. Proses fermentasi masih menggunakan karungkarung bekas sehingga banyak biji yang busuk. Pengeringan biji kakao dilakukan di halaman rumah dan masih mengandalkan panas dari sumber matahari sehingga permasalahan muncul pada kondisi cuaca kurang baik. Proses pengeringan seperti ini menyebabkan biji kakao masih mengandung kadar air yang tinggi sehingga dapat menyebabkan busuk terserang cendawan atau jamur. Kelompok tani Sri Gunung dan Serawan Jaya telah mencoba mengatasi hambatan-hambatan ini. Faktor kurangnya modal dan pengetahuuan menyebabkan program kelompok tani tersebut mengalami kendala. Tim pengabdian pada masyarakat USU memberikan solusi dengan cara pembuatan peralatan fermentasi dan pengeringan biji kakao yang dirakit bersama-sama dengan masyarakat agar selain mereka akan memiiki peraatan yang mereka butuhkan juga terjadi transfer ilmu dan teknologi yang dapat mereka kembangkan kelak ke depan.
Abstract. The oil palm, an economically important tree in Indonesia, has been one of the world's major sources of edible oil and a significant precursor of biodiesel fuel. The objectives of this study were to know DNA profile of commercial MTG (Moderat Tahan Gano) oil palm variety collections. A total of 10 trees MTG oil palm variety were used for analysis. In this experiment, the DNA profile diversity was assessed using mEgCIR0174 and SSR-1 loci of oil palm's specific SSR markers. The results of the experiment indicated out of 3 alleles of pcr product of mEgCIR0174 (198, 203 and 208 bp) and 217 and 232 bp). These preliminary results demonstrated SSR marker can be used to evaluate genetic relatedness among trees of MTG (Moderat Tahan Gano) oil palm variety derived from different crossing or difference to desease resistance trait or misslabeled.

A three-way cross is an artificial cross performed to assemble superior cultivars for increased soybean production. The presented study aims to evaluate the percentage of success in the single cross and three-way cross of soybean genotypes to enhance the genetic variability in the base population of the genetic material. The genetic material comprises three soybean cultivars, i.e., Grobogan, Anjasmoro, and Dega-1. The three-way cross design operation made various crosses. Parameters observed were plant morphology, percentage of cross success and seed formation in pods, number of seeds in pod, and the total seed weight. The results showed a relatively high (57.14%) success rate for the cross Grobogan × Anjasmoro, producing numerous one-seeded and two-seeded pods and 30 seeds per plant with a total weight of 5.4 g. However, the success rate in three-way cross (F1 descent [Grobogan × Anjasmoro] × Dega-1) was medium (35.37%). The results of crossing the three genotypes of parents will greatly determine soybean variability.
