Cultural and Social Representations on the Border: From Disagreement to CoexistenceIn the twentieth century, certain locations, symbols, and ritual practices along the Italian-Slovenian border were subject to various social and cultural representations. During that century, they primarily represented a subject of disagreement between both ethnic communities; however, in the last ten years, some groups and local authorities have been seeking opportunities to live together in coexistence.
*** Researchers dealing with folk culture, lifestyles, cultural objectifications, empirical study of culture, and so on continually deal with the question of how to represent the “whole” – that is, the totality of life of particular community in a given environment: which statements, informants, and so on to select and present. This article examines certain realizations characteristic of twentieth-century studies in ethnography, ethnology.
This thematic issue of Traditiones is dedicated to heroes and national leaders, and is mainly compiled from papers presented at a conference in Ljubljana in December 2013. The publication of these papers in 2014 presents an opportunity to remember the hundredth anniversary of the beginning of the First World War and at the same time offers a framework for reflections on how individual leaders in Europe or on its margins influenced and guided the masses in times of peace and war, and in times of crisis and catastrophe.
The EU constitutional crisis has shown how “Europe” is far from being a homogeneous entity. It is a mix of countries both large and small, old and new, that perceive and present themselves in different ways, and use different culturallyconstructed strategies and tactics in relation to an imagined “Europeanness.” Based on concrete practices between an EU member state and a non–member state, the author discusses Eurocentrism and the relations between official and subcultural discourse. This also involves examining selected texts in several books (Wolfe, Kockel, and Vivod) and issues raised by scholarly groups and their discourse regarding where the center of Europe lies, the relations between old member states and candidate countries, and desire and uneasiness as the fundamental ambivalence of old and new EU countries.
