English language proficiency is generally measured by English competency scores such as TOEFL and TOEIC. To be able to apply the right learning patterns for students of Politeknik Negeri Balikpapan (Poltekba) for the purpose of mastering the TOEIC, an analysis of their English proficiency is needed by measuring their TOEIC scores. This analysis can be used as a reference for English lecturers in providing relevant learning materials according to the needs of the students and the industrial world. The research method used is qualitative-quantitative because it focuses on analyzing the TOEIC scores of the students. The researchers conducted analysis on the TOEIC scores as the data and explained them descriptively. The data used in this analysis are TOEIC scores from 291 students. The scores were mapped into 6 levels of English proficiency. The results of this study describe the level of English proficiency and the comparison between mastering Listening and Reading Comprehensions by the students at Politeknik Negeri Balikpapan.
As an action research in nature, the research aimed to test the progress of the students’ ESP writing skills when guided writing technique is implemented in writing class and to know the ESP students’ attitude towards guided writing technique. This action research is conducted in two cycles. In collecting the data, the researcher uses qualitative and quantitave technique. The qualitative data are obtained from observation, interview, and test analysis. The qualitative data are supported by quantitative data that are the mean score of students’ pre-test and post-test on ESP writing. The procedure of guided writing which is implemented in ESP writing class are model paragraph, comprehension questions, language based exercises, oral composition, and written composition. After the analysis of data collected through test items, it was seen improvement in students’ ESP writing skills in post-test than in pre-test. The students have shown their improvement such as they are able to construct sentences correctly. They could use appropriate language use when created the pattern of tenses, article, preposition, pronoun, conjunction, and part of speech and also they used better mechanical aspects in writing like capitalization, punctuation, and spelling in post-test than in pretest. Moreover, they can use correct ESP diction on their writing after implemented this technique. The ESP students’ attitudes also were enthusiastic and more active involved in ESP writing class.
The need for electrical energy is a basic requirement besides the need for food and clothing, electrical energy is absolutely needed by the community to support all their daily activities. The purpose of carrying out community service activities is to provide an alternative source of electrical energy by utilizing solar cell panels which can be felt by the public in the form of DC voltage and AC voltage through an inverter device. The method applied in this service activity is to set a plan in the form of a system work diagram and then carry out the service activities in accordance with the work plan that was made previously. The results obtained are the availability of lighting facilities and electrical energy to start the pump so that it can meet the lighting needs and water needs of the orphanage.
The purpose of this study is (1) to determine the interest and motivation of lecturer in State Polytechnic of Balikpapan to English; (2) to determine the relationship between interest and motivation toward their result in English learning activity. There are two data that used in this research, the first data is taken from the result of English learning activity, and the second data is taken from questionnaires which given to the 20 respondent. Distribution of questionnaires is given to the lecturer in State Polytechnic of Balikpapan. The questionnaires consist of several questions that can determine the interest and motivation to learn or involve in English learning activity. And the data from English learning activities is used to analyze whether there is any relationship between them. The analysis of data is given through the descriptive method. The results showed that (1) There is an interest of the lecturer in State Polytechnic of Balikpapan to follow the English training, it shows with the frequency of “always” in 94 frequency as the biggest one than other, but also there are a few of them has no interest to follow that training. (2) There is a motivation of the lecturer in State Polytechnic of Balikpapan to learn English but they have difficulties to understand the materials. (3) There is a well-motivated with Low-achievement Category for the lecturer of State Polytechnic of Balikpapan, means that their lower comprehend ability and score are not caused of their lower interest, but it caused of their former skill is not good enough.
Electrical energy is a primary need in modern human life. However, with the increase in fuel prices, the right technology is needed to overcome it, in the form of battery and inverter innovations which are combined to produce an output of 220 volts ac which has the same capacity as PLN electricity. This PkM DPRM activity was held in Manggar Village for 3 days, namely @ u on July 30, August 3 and August 4, 2020 which was attended by fishermen, fried food traders and Manggar Village employees themselves. The equipment is designed with a capacity of 300 watts and 1000 watts, tailored to the needs of the residents. The benefit greatly eases the use of diesel generator sets for fishermen, which from Rp. 108,000 / month, has now become Rp. 0, -. Likewise for fried food traders, who originally paid Rp. 70,000 / month for electricity for lighting at night, now it is Rp. 0, -. Based on the results of the questionnaire, participants are very grateful for the presence of this technology in their village.
