Auditory information is initially processed in the cochlear nuclei before being relayed to the brain. The cochlear nuclei are subdivided into dorsal, anterior ventral, and posterior ventral domains, each containing several subtypes of neurons that are thought to play discrete roles in the processing of sound. However, the ontogeny of these neurons is poorly understood, and this gap in knowledge hampers efforts to understand the basic neural circuitry of this nucleus. Here, we reveal that Bhlhb5 is expressed in both excitatory (unipolar brush cells) and inhibitory neurons (cartwheel cells) of the DCN during development. To gain genetic access to Bhlhb5-expressing neurons in the DCN, we generated a Bhlhb5::flpo knockin allele. Using an intersectional genetic strategy, we labeled cartwheel cells, thereby providing proof of concept that subpopulations of Bhlhb5-expressing neurons can be genetically targeted. Moreover, fate-mapping experiments using this allele revealed that Bhlhb5 is required for the proper development of the DCN, since mice lacking Bhlhb5 showed a dramatically diminished number of neurons, including unipolar brush and cartwheel cells. Intriguingly, the Bhlhb5::flpo allele also genetically labels numerous other regions of the nervous system that process sensory input, including the dorsal horn, the retina, and the nucleus of the lateral olfactory tract, hinting at a more general role for Bhlhb5 in the development of neurons that mediate sensory integration.
We collected acute-phase and convalescent-phase serum samples from Brazilian patients who presented with exanthem of unknown origin and evaluated these samples by means of an immunoblot assay for seroconversion to human herpesvirus 6 (HIV-6) or human herpesvirus 7 (HIV-7). Measles or rubella had been clinically diagnosed in all these patients, but their sera were negative for antibodies to both measles virus and rubella virus. Twenty percent of the patients clearly seroconverted to HHV-6 after manifestation of the exanthem, and 8% seroconverted to HHV-7. All seroconversions to HHV-6 occurred in children aged < or = 5 years; a 41% frequency of seroconversion to HHV-6 was noted among children between 3 months and 23 months of age, whereas seroconversions to HHV-7 were detected during infancy and through adulthood. Our data indicate that primary infections due to HHV-6 or HHV-7 can be misdiagnosed as measles or rubella.
The dizziness symptom was highly prevalent in the population of Minas Gerais during the assessed month of the investigation. Dizziness was prevalent in adults and the elderly and showed a statistical association with socioeconomic and demographic characteristics, as well as the assessed health status.
Abstract The last decade in Brazil was marked by substantial investments in the real state sector, including the construction of new housing units for low-income households. Despite such a significant flow of resources, an appraisal of indicators related to housing needs that have guided public policies in the sector exposes a relative persistence of the so-called housing shortage. An analysis of the housing shortage indicator between 2007 and 2014 shows that one of its four essential components, the urban rental affordability stress, was the main responsible for the observed growth tendency. In order to understand the behavior of the components of the housing shortage and, particularly, of the urban rental affordability stress, the paper brings a conceptual discussion regarding the housing shortage indicator, by means of the theoretical framework provided by urban political ecology, as well as of a comparative analysis between the different calculation methodologies for this indicator adopted by Latin American countries. The proposed debate aims to contribute to a critical review of the housing shortage indicator and the improvement of the calculation of housing needs in Brazil. Keywords: housing shortage, rental affordability stress, urban political ecology, Latin America.
