Two studies, arranged according to a 4 × 4 Latin square design, were conducted to assess effects of dietary acidification on fungal 3-phytase (PHY) efficacy in growing pigs. In Exp. 1, effects of supplementing 500 units/kg feed of PHY and 4.7 g/kg HCOOH either alone or in combination on the use of P and Zn in growing pigs fed a pelleted diet based on wheat (Triticum aestivum), barley (Hordeum vulgare), and soybean (Glycine max) meal were investigated. In Exp. 2 the same dietary treatments were fed except that PHY supplementation was increased to 1000 units/kg. In both experiments, PHY supplementation increased (P < 0.05) P digestibility and retention. A PHY × HCOOH supplementation interaction on P balance was observed (P < 0.05), indicating that the combination of the additives may increase P digestibility and retention. Effects of HCOOH and PHY on Zn use followed a similar pattern. Supplementation of 1000 units/kg of PHY further increased P and Zn retention compared to supplementation of 500 units/kg. In conclusion, the present study indicated that HCOOH supplementation to diets with microbial PHY may increase PHY efficacy.
In cereal-based diets, non-starch polysaccharides (NSP) lower precaecal nutrient absorption and increase endogenous protein and amino acid (AA) losses. Adding exogenous NSP-degrading enzymes aims amongst others to reduce these negative effects and to thereby improve protein and AA supply. However, biased results exist in the literature on their efficacy in growing pigs. Hence, the objective of this study was to analyse the effects of different levels of xylanase and beta-glucanase supplementation. Nitrogen (N) retention from a threonine-limited diet was chosen as an indirect indicator for differences in praecaecal threonine absorption and endogenous protein and AA losses. During three balance periods, 12 male pigs with a bodyweight of 31-66 kg were used in a cross-over design. They received three different diets based on wheat, barley, rye, and soybean meal containing 0, 40 or 80 mg/kg of an enzyme preparation containing endo-1,4,-beta-xylanase and endo-1,4-beta-glucanase. N excretion and retention were identical in animals of the different treatment groups, stressing that enzyme supplementation did not affect threonine absorption and/or endogenous protein and AA losses neither at medium nor at high supplementation level. Hence, in the present trial, beta-glucanase and xylanase addition to cereal diets did not improve protein and AA availability in growing pigs of a body weight > 30 kg.
Scientifically derived recommendations for the energy supply to growing pigs are generally based on estimates of the metabolisable energy (ME) requirements for maintenance (MEm) and protein (MEp) and fat (MEf) retention. It is supposed that animals are kept within the zone of thermoneutrality and that their physical activity is not elevated. These assumptions might not always be true for practical housing conditions, and it is difficult to quantify the additional energy needed for thermoregulation and physical activity. Hence, at a given ME intake, differences can occur between the actual growth rates and those predicted from the recommendations. To quantify such differences, three trials were carried out under commercial farming conditions with pigs growing from 25 to 120 kg body weight (BW). In each trial, 624 castrated male and female pigs were allocated to four feeding groups distributed over 24 double pens. The rations were provided according to the animals' feed intake capacity and BW was recorded every three weeks. Protein, fat and energy retention (RE) was derived from carcass composition and BW gain. The difference between ME intake and MEm plus ME required for growth (MEg = RE/kpf) was calculated and seen as the ME required for purposes other than maintenance and growth (MEx). MEx accounted for 2.0%, 17.0% and 21.4% of the animals' ME intake in Trials 1, 2 and 3, respectively, and was higher in female than in castrated male pigs when related to metabolic BW. It was concluded that total ME requirements of pigs kept under commercial housing conditions can be considerably higher than ME requirements predicted from feeding standards since they usually ignore MEx. MEx can be used as an indicator for the quality of housing systems. Further studies are needed to identify the key factors responsible for MEx to allow for more precise recommendations for the energy supply to commercially raised pigs.
