SynopsisCopolymers with a quaternary ammonium salt side group have been prepared from vinylbenzyl-cetyldimethylammonium chloride and acrylonitrile and their antibacterial activity has been examined with Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus aureus, and Escherichiu coli. Growth inhibitory effect has been found to increase with the increase in the quaternary ammonium salt concentrhtion in the copolymer. The effect is small on gram-negative bacteria and large on gram-positive bacteria.
Homopolymers of cetyldimethyl(4-viny1benzyl)ammonium chloride (VB 16), lauryldimethyl(4-vinylbenzyl)ammonium chloride (VB 12), and trimethyl (4-vinylbenzy1)ammonium chloride (VBI), and copolymers of these compounds with acrylonitrile were examined for antibacterial activity using B. subtilis, S. aureus, E. coli, and P. aeruginosa. All homopolymers and copolymers showed germicidal action to the bacterias, especially strong action to gram-positive B. subtilis and S. aureus. The strength of the germicidal action of the quaternary ammonium branches was in the order: VB16 > VB12 % VB1.
Copolymerization of sodium vinyl benzyl sulfonate (VBS) or vinyl benzyl trimethyl ammonium chloride (VBQ) with acrylonitrile (AN) gave polyelectrolytes of preferable solution viscosities. The blending of these two copolymers in N,N‐dimethyl formamide (DMF) produced polymer complexes with ionic linkages, of which the following properties were examined. The maximum in the tan δ temperature was increased by complex formation. Freundlich‐type dye adsorption and much better dyeability than on polyacrylonitrile was observed. Electric resistivity decreased with the introduction of ionic moiety. Permeability of water increased with the number of ionic sites. Homogeneous films could be cast from DMF and dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) solutions.
We studied the stretching of P. V. C. gel, which contained isophorone, in different heat mediums. The sample was taken out by melt-extruding method.Tenacity of the gel was increased by stretching but elongation was decreased. The properties of stretched gel was varied with the kind of heat mediums. It means that the properties of the gel are based on the take-off velocity of isophorone. (
