The practice of teaching translation was often done by discussing translation theories and translating texts in the classroom. However, the problem is students also need to have a real-life experience as professional translators that will be useful for them in the future. This paper presents the findings of a research study conducted in a translation class of English Education Department students in the State Islamic University of North Sumatra. The research is about Translation Agency Project as innovation strategy to teach translation subject. The students were assigned to develop their own translation agency by promoting their agency, handling the clients, and translating the texts. The objective of this research is to identify the challenges faced by the students in running their Translation Agency Project. It also includes how students cope with those challenges. Finally, it describes the benefits of using Translation Agency Project in teaching translation. The method of this research is descriptive qualitative method for translation studies (Toury, 1995) based on theoretical research compared to a survey applied to students of English Education Department who have learned about translation theories. As a result, after analyzing the data, it can be seen that the biggest challenge the students faced in conducting their translation agency is advertising the translation agency (43%), meeting with clients (36%), and translating the texts (21%). Finally, after analyzing the survey, it shows that translation Agency Project is an effective and recommended strategy to teach translation theories in the class.
This study is about how to formulate the translation technique applied by the translator in translating Mandailing Folklore Anak Na Dangol Ni Andung into English, to identify the translation technique used in translating Anak Na Dangol Ni Andung into English, and to know the quality of translation in translating Anak Na Dangol Ni Andung into English. The purpose of this study were to (1) formulate the translation technique that was applied by the translator in translating Mandailing Folklore Anak Na Dangol Ni Andung into English, (2) identify the translation technique that was used in translating Anak Na Dangol Ni Andung into English, and (3) know how the quality of translation in translating Anak Na Dangol Ni Andung into English. The research findings are as follows. First, this study found that in translating the text Anak Na Dangol Ni Andung into English discovered the existence of two techniques, namely single translation technique 9,1% and dual translation technique 90,9%. Second, the results showed that from 22 data consists of 50% data is an accurate translation and 50% less accurate translation. Meanwhile, 77.3% were acceptable and 22.7% less acceptable. From the aspect of its readability, 86.4% had high readability and 13.6% had medium readability. From the results of this research of 22 data sources analyzed, it was identified that the quality of the translation is accurate, acceptable and has a high degree of readability.
Purpose -This paper is aimed at describing semantics equivalence of cultural terms in meurukon texts translated from Acehnese into Indonesian. A qualitative descriptive approach is used to analyze the context of semantics equivalence in these texts: varied semantics structure, especially the ones caused by the cultural gap between the two languages.Design/Methodology/Approach -This research is designed to be of qualitative descriptive nature, wherein data are documented and analyzed using various methods proposed by Miles, Huberman, and Saldana ( 2014), such as data condensation, data display, drawing and verifying conclusions. The researcher is considered the key instrument in the whole process. The source of the data collected is from meurukon texts and its translation that consists of 623 sentences: they mainly comprise words and phrases that contain semantics equivalence of cultural terms.Findings -The result of the research shows that there are 129 cultural terms found in 623 sentences. Of the analyzed data, it is seen that only 16.66% of the data is not equivalent with the target text, while 83.34% words and phrases of meurukon text are equivalent. This suggests that as a result of translation, the meurukon text has high semantics or lexical equivalences with the target text.Research Limitations/Implications -This research is focused on semantics equivalence found in meurukon texts. The semantic equivalence here only pertains to lexical meaning of nouns and adjectives by using componential analysis.Practical Implications -The result can be used in a sample of ways for the analysis of semantics equivalence of cultural terms in meurukon text translated from Acehnese into Indonesian using componential analysis.Originality/value -This research identifies meurukon as an oral tradition of Acehnese culture, which is in the question and answer format about Islamic law in Aceh, specifically North Aceh.
The form of a phrasal verb may be the same but they bear different meanings in accordance with the context of situation. The dynamics of language also influence the change of phrasal verb meanings. This paper presents the problems faced by the translator in translating several phrasal verbs in the novel Thirteen Reasons Why by applying the theory of Ghazala in which it is stated that phrasal verbs are linked with the lexical problems and stylistics. Lexical problems coccur when a word, a phrase or an expression is not understood clearly and directly, misunderstood, not known at all to translators, or not found in standard dictionaries, while stylistic problems, righty seen as a part of meaning strongly affect the style of source language posing problems for the translator as the styles of the ST and TT could not be easily adjusted to similarity. The data in the forms of phrasal verbs are taken from the source language and in the target language, supported by the descriptive qualitative method. The results of show that the problems in translating the phrasal verbs in the novel lie in lexical words (literal meaning, synonymy, polysemy, and idiom) and stylistics (formality and informality of language)
