Mathematics as a subject has remained difficult and unpopular for most students. This is despite its importance in almost all careers, especially in the science and technological fields. This is partially due to the teaching methods employed by educators which place students in the spectator role. With the availability of the ever advancing and improving Information Communication Technologies, the nature of learning and teaching in mathematics is expected to change which places students in the active role. Facilities provided by ICTs can be taken advantage of to enhance the positive attitude towards the learning of mathematics by pupils or students. This paper discusses the research that has been done in this area and outlines the general benefits of integrating the use of ICT in mathematics. The paper also proposes the use of Matlab in teaching of sketching of mathematical graphs to students.
Abstract-The integration of ICTs in the teaching and learning curricula is the apparent goal for initiatives to improve education in schools. Most Schools however, look for specialised educational software and hardware to achieve this integration. This paper proposes the use of a widely readily available tool to achieve the same integration that other specialized tools would achieve. Over the years the application area for spreadsheets has multiplied. It is software that is becoming more pronounced in the teaching and learning of pupils and students. A Spreadsheet can be used as a powerful learning tool for both primary and secondary school pupils. Spreadsheets offer concrete ways to explore abstract concepts in mathematics and other subjects. Spreadsheets contain a variety of formulas, which can be used in teaching mathematics. These formulas can be generalized, so that students can see how the outcome is changed when one of the variables is altered. Apart from using ready-made formulas pupils can make up their own formulas to manipulate numbers. This paper proposes the use of Ms Excel in the teaching and learning of statistics in secondary schools. This paper demonstrates the ability for Ms Excel to teach almost all the topics in secondary school statistics.
The paper attempted to bring out the challenges that hinder sustainable implementation of Information communication Technology (ICT) as a subject in rural Zambian schools. The methodology employed in carrying out the exercise included the review of relevant literature published from printed and electronic sources including research studies, evaluation reports, government policy documents, donor policy documents and project reports, newspaper reports and so on. Among the most notable factors that emerged as challenges that hinder sustainable implementation of ICT as a subject in schools in rural Schools in developing countries such as Zambia are; Lack of electricity, Inadequate ICT teachers to teach the subject, high pupil-computer ratio and lack of enough ICT learning and teaching materials. Given the challenges above, the paper proposes an implementation framework. The framework reflects the four players that might influence the successful implementation of ICT as a subject in the rural schools of Zambia. These players are the Government, School administration, Cooperating partners and Colleges and Universities.
The speedy development of technology in the use of smartphones and their mobile applications (apps) have become momentous and influential in today’s consumer perceptions. Accordingly, the media has in recent years advocated the nutritional, environmental, and economic benefits of edible insects. However, there is still a lacklustre aggressive multipronged approach to filling the awareness and acceptability gap of entomophagy through mobile apps and media. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the contribution of a developed and designed Mobile App in comparison with Other-Media Platforms in creating awareness and lack of acceptability. A total of 200 questionnaires were purposively distributed, 100 to each group and retained a 92% response rate. PLS-SEM was employed to simultaneously explain and predict the structural relationships among the (Insefood Mobile App and Other Media Platforms) and (Awareness and Acceptability). The reliability and validity of the measurement model were assessed using the four recommended procedural remedies; Factor loadings, Average Variance Extracted (AVE), Composite Reliability (CR), and Discriminant Validity. The structural model assessment and bootstrap resampling procedure was conducted to ascertain the statistical significance of path coefficients after running the PLS algorithm. The findings indicated high coefficients of determination for Insefood App, about 80% on awareness and 83% on acceptability, while Other Media Platforms’ coefficient of determination was 28% on awareness and 35% on acceptability. Predictive relevance of Insefood values 0.562 on acceptability and 0.535 on awareness, and other media platforms recorded 0.061 on acceptability and 0.081 on awareness at (p˂ 0.05). Thus, Insefood Mobile App contributed highly to awareness and acceptability than Other-Media Platforms. Affirmed the higher efficiency of the Insefood Mobile App in driving awareness and acceptability at a larger scale than Other Media Platforms. This informs the need to Engage in robust and more technological yet, vigorous insect-product marketing.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
