Extract of G. picrorrhiza has potential to increase antioxidant, anticollagenase, and antielastase activities. Therefore, more investigations need for identification of the active compounds in G. picrorrhiza extract involved in antioxidant and antiaging activities.
Purpose: The objective of the activity is to educate TB patients and families of TB patients about how to prevent TB transmission and the correct use of masks and the use of masks.Method: Activity targets were 35 people from 20 families of TB patients in Johar Baru area, Central Jakarta. activities carried out are socialization, counseling about the use of masks, giving masks to respondents, and evaluation activities. The extension media used were posters on "5 Ways of TB Prevention" and posters about wearing the correct mask. The counseling was conducted in three visits, ie on February 9, February 10, and February 14, 2017. The counseling was conducted to all families of TB patients who were targeted for the activity. Results: The result of the activity is the extension can increase the knowledge of the respondents about the prevention of TB transmission by 85,7%. In addition, it can improve the respondent's knowledge about how to use mask and practice of mask use by 100%. Conclusion: Continuous activity needs to be carried out so that good knowledge can be maintained and expected to form a positive attitude and later expected to form good hygiene personal behavior.
Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a disease that can be identified by high levels of blood glucose. Garcinia plants have been widely used for many traditional medicines as antioxidant, anticancer, antidiabetics, and antiinflammation. The antioxidant and antidiabetic activities of (Garcinia picrorrhiza Miq.) or sesoot fruit extract were evaluated in this study and compared with xanthone. The antioxidant and antidiabetic of ethanolic ripe sesoot (G. picrorrhiza Miq.) fruit extract (GpKar) was evaluated by 2,2-Azinobis 3-ethyl benzothiazoline 6-sulfonic acid (ABTS •+ ) reducing activity, α-Glucosidase, β-Glucosidase, and α-amylase inhibitor activity. GpKar showed higher ABTS •+ -reducing activity (IC 50 = 49.30 µg/mL) than xanthone (IC 50 = 404.30 µg/mL). GpKar showed IC 50 = 109.32 µg/mL for α-glucosidase inhibitory activity, while xanthones had a better activity (IC 50 = 33.97 µg/mL). GpKar also showed lower α-amylase inhibitory activity and β-Glucosidase (IC 50 = 126.01 and 9432.09 µg/mL) compared to xanthone (IC 50 = 44.32 and 405.03 µg/mL, respectively). The compounds of GpKar are proven to have antioxidant and antidiabetic activities. Therefore, it will be industrially relevant to develop a natural medicine for decreasing DM risk, thus evaluating the antioxidant and antidiabetic effect of G. picrorrhiza by a pre-clinic study is needed.
Diarrhea is an infectious disease which is a major cause of morbidityand mortality in the community. Diarrhea can be caused bygastrointestinal parasites, especially intestinal protozoa. Poor levels ofsanitation and low individual hygiene can lead to contamination of theinfective form of intestinal protozoa into food and drinks. The results ofpre-survey were at RPTRA Harapan Mulia in October 2016 that therewere still people in the settlements still not using personal latrines. Thelevel of cleanliness of mass latrines used collectively is still lacking.Latrines that are not managed properly are a description of sanitation aswell as poor hygiene so that it can disrupt the health of individuals andreduce work productivity and learning achievement. Counseling wascarried out to educate PKK group in Kelurahan Harapan Mulya, aboutthe habit of clean and healthy living through good latrine managementso as not to become a source of contamination into food and drinks, aswell as the correct way of washing hands. The extension method usedwas lectures and discussions with pre and post test assessment. Theextension activity was conducted one visit, on February 23, 2017. Totalrespondents were 27 people and had signed the approval sheet.Assessment of respondents' knowledge which is calculated from the valueof the pre and post test questionnaires shows results that increase by100%. At the end of the activity the respondent was given a leaflet on theprocedure for good hand washing and a kit for hand washing.
